First government-funded liberal arts education provider in Hong Kong

As a government-funded liberal arts university in Hong Kong, Lingnan is committed to the provision of quality education distinguished by the best liberal arts traditions. It adopts a whole-person approach to education which enables its students to think, judge, care and, ultimately, act responsibly in the changing circumstances of Hong Kong, the region and the world.

Curricula

Lingnan University offers full-time undergraduate programmes leading to honours degrees. These programmes are grouped under three categories, viz. Arts, Business and Social Sciences. To accomplish Lingnan’s mission of providing its students with an education in the liberal arts tradition, all undergraduate programmes feature a distinctive style of integrated and balanced curriculum. Apart from courses in the respective disciplines, the General Education Programme and Chinese and English languages are essential components in each curriculum.

Teaching and learning

Lingnan adopts a student-oriented teaching and learning approach, and emphasises close faculty-student relationship. We stress interactive teaching and learning modes that mobilise students to reach for higher levels of intellectual discourse, analytical thinking and independent research capability. Likewise, we also adopt innovative teaching and learning approaches that include internships, overseas field trips, immersion language studies, directed research projects, cooperative learning and action learning.

High standard of research and academic performance

In the UGC 2014 Research Assessment Exercise conducted by the University Grants Committee (which advises the Hong Kong government on development and funding of tertiary institutions), it is confirmed that Lingnan have demonstrated our deep commitment to research and scholarship while at the same time remaining true to our liberal arts mission in providing quality teaching and mentorship to our students.

Residential campus

Campus life, especially hostel life, is regarded as an essential part of a liberal arts education. In 2014, we became the first university in Hong Kong to accomplish the goal of providing 4-year full residence for UGC-funded full-time Undergraduate Students and Research Postgraduate Students.

Internationalisation

A major objective of Lingnan’s liberal arts education is to provide students with international exposure and whole-person development, particularly through bilateral cultural exchange. This is achieved by sending students abroad to experience different cultures, and by admitting non-local students for exchange or degree studies, so that they can experience our liberal arts environment as well as enrich it. Through cross-cultural interaction and exchange, our students not only gain additional knowledge, but also extra-curricular learning experiences and exposure to other cultures.

Service-Learning

Lingnan offers service-learning to its undergraduate students. Service-Learning integrates community service with the students’ curricula and provides a distinctive learning experience for all-round development.

Eligibility

If you are interested in student exchange programmes at Lingnan, please approach the international office at your home university for details.
In general, you must have completed at least 2 terms of full-time study at your home institution prior to your exchange study. You must also fulfill the following minimum academic requirements:

• A cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.5 (on a 4-point scale) or above
• Students whose native language are not English are required to submit a TOEFL score of 213 (computer-based), 550 (paper-based) or 79 (internet-based), or an IELTS score of 6.0.

Application for Student Exchange Programmes

Application Procedures

Step 1
You are advised to talk with your study abroad advisor and/or academic advisor of your home institution before applying for the Student Exchange Programmes.

Step 2
Please read carefully the notes attached to the Exchange Application Form before filling it in.

Step 3
In the Exchange Application Form, you should indicate the list of courses that you intend to study at Lingnan:

For 1st Term and/or 2nd Term:
Please check the Detailed Course Descriptions. You are required to register your courses online, details of which will be provided after acceptance.

For Summer School:
Please check the Detailed Course Descriptions. Based on your preferences, Lingnan will try to pre-register you in the course as far as possible. Please be aware that it may not always be possible to register for every class that you choose. 

Step 4
You should fill in the Exchange Application Form together with Student Visa Application Form (Please refer to section below for Visa Application procedures). The duly completed original Application Forms and Student Visa Application should be sent to us via your home institution by courier before application deadline.

Upon successful application¹, the original letter of acceptance will be sent directly to your home institution. You will also receive a copy via e-mail.

 Note:
¹Selection Mechanism for Inbound Exchange Programme

• All applicants should apply to their home institutions and follow the selection process of their corresponding institutions.
• Exchange Coordinator of Partner Institutions will endorse in Part K of the Application Form for all successful applicants and nominate the successful applicants to OGE, Lingnan University.
• OGE receives nominations from Partner Institutions only.
• OGE checks if the nominees meet minimum admission requirements of the programme.
• Acceptance of eligible nominees will be approved by Associate Vice-President (Academic Affairs) and Registrar of Lingnan University.

Student Visa for Education in Hong Kong

Before coming to Hong Kong, you must obtain a student visa from the Immigration Department of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region if

• you wish to enter Hong Kong for education; and
• you do not have the right of abode or right to land in Hong Kong

You should ensure that you are eligible to apply for a student visa to study in Hong Kong. Lingnan is not responsible for obtaining visas for non-local students, but will render all necessary support to admitted students.

Application Procedures

Step 1
You should complete the Student Visa Application Form ID995A in BLOCK (CAPITAL) LETTERS with

• your photograph affixed on it;
• photocopies of your travel document²,containing your personal particulars, its issuance and expiry dates and details of any re-entry visa held (if applicable); and
• evidence of your financial standing³

Notes:
²Your travel document e.g. passport should be valid for at least six months beyond the intended stay in Hong Kong. 
³If you do not make any income, please provide us a proof your parents’ financial standing (e.g. recent bank statements/savings accounts passbooks) and a financial supporting letter stating that your parents can support your expenses during your stay in Hong Kong.

Page 12 for English version and Page 9 for Chinese version.
You are advised to complete the Student Visa Application Form with due care. Your application process may be lengthened if there are any follow-up questions from us / the Immigration Department regarding your application. The completed Student Visa Application Form should be returned to us TOGETHER with your Exchange Application Form. Do NOT submit your visa application directly to the Hong Kong Immigration Department as it will slow down the process.

Step 2
As your sponsor, Lingnan will complete ID995B of your Student Visa Application Form, and submit the whole set of documents to the Hong Kong Immigration Department on your behalf. It takes approximately 4-6 weeks for the Immigration Department to process visa applications, upon all required documents are submitted.

Step 3
Upon your successful visa application, Lingnan will collect your student visa/ entry permit label and send it to your home institution through international courier.

Step 4
When you receive your visa/entry permit label, please attach it to a blank page in your passport before your arrival to Hong Kong. You should show the page with your visa affixed to the on-duty Immigration officer when you enter Hong Kong so that you enter Hong Kong with a student status. Otherwise, the officer may grant you a tourist visa only which will not allow you to commence your studies in Hong Kong. 

Application Fees

You will need to pay an amount of HK$400, covering

• the non-refundable fee for student visa application charged by the Immigration Department (HK$160); and
• the postage (HK$240)

The above payment can be settled either by

• sending us a bank draft; or
• providing your credit card details on the Credit Card Payment Authorization Form.

 Failure to do so will incur a late fee upon arrival.

Conditions for a Person holding Student Visa Status

It is clearly stipulated by the Immigration Department that any person entering Hong Kong as a student shall be subject to the following conditions of stay that:
(a) he/she shall become a student only at a specified school, university or other educational institution and undertake such course of study as may be approved by the Director of Immigration; and
(b) he/she shall not (i) take any employment, whether paid or unpaid; or (ii) establish or join in any business.

Academic Studies

Courses on offer

Study Load

All incoming students at Lingnan must enroll for a full-time student status with reference to the immigration laws of the HKSAR. To qualify for full-time status at Lingnan, you are required to take at least 12 credits per term, i.e. 4 courses with 3 credits each.
The normal study load of full-time students should be in the range of 15 to 18 credits in a term. The maximum study load is 18 credits in a term and 33 credits in an academic year.

Language of Instruction

Apart from language courses and courses in the Chinese (CHI-coded) and Translation (TRA-coded) Departments, all courses are taught in English except otherwise specified. Generally about 75% of all classes taught at Lingnan are available in English. For classes taught in Chinese, the class schedules published for each term specify the medium of instruction is Cantonese or Putonghua.

Credit Transfer

Lingnan adopts a credit-based system similar to those of North American institutions. Courses completed by exchange students at Lingnan are transferable. However, it is the sole responsibility of your home institution to determine how many credit units you may actually receive from courses taken at Lingnan.

All exchange students are required to live on-campus and share room with a local student during the entire period of study at Lingnan. Rooms are randomly assigned. There are a total of 8 student hostels providing residential places to students in air-conditioned rooms. They are:

A Standard Student Room (Twins-sharing)
Each exchange student shares an air-conditioned student room, at approximately 110 sq ft, with another student and is furnished with:

• 1 cabinet
• 1 desk and chair
• 1 single bed (6’ long)¹
• Free LAN service connected to the University’s network system
• Free electricity

Note:
¹ If you are taller than 180 cm, please request for a longer bed on your Student Exchange Application Form or contact us at exchange@LN.edu.hk before departure.

Common facilities include:

• Laundry room with washing machines and dryers
• Pantry with boilers, microwave ovens and refrigerators installed on each student bedroom floor
• Free public telephones (not provided with international call service) at the lift lobby on each student bedroom floor

Accommodation Fees

Depending on the exchange agreement between Lingnan and respective home institutions:

Linen Set

For exchange students, you can choose to bring your own linen or buy a new set from us (including a pillow, a pillow case, a bed sheet and a comforter). Please indicate your preference in the Student Exchange Application Form. Late requests may not be entertained.

Health & Insurance

Lingnan has no mandatory health requirements on incoming students. Prior to your arrival, you are advised to check with the recommendation of Hospital Authority for vaccinations if any. For more health information, your can visit Travel Health Service of the Department of Health.

Insurance Arrangements

Lingnan recommends all incoming students to get suitable and adequate insurance covering travel, personal accident, medical expenses (accident and non-accident), hospitalisation and emergency evacuation / repatriation throughout the entire period of your study at Lingnan.

You are required to send us your proof of insurance coverage prior to your arrival for record purpose. You will bear your own risk if you fail to cover yourselves with adequate travel and medical coverage. You shall be responsible for all possible consequences. Lingnan is not responsible for any consequences that may arise before, during and after your entire exchange period.

Student Medical Benefits Scheme

• All full-time Lingnan students are covered by the Student Medical Benefits Scheme. The Scheme covers general doctors’ consultation including prescriptions, and necessary laboratory tests accompanied by referral letters. Eligible students can visit the designated out-patient clinics in Hong Kong at a nominal fee. The designated clinics scattered over Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, the New Territories and Outlying Island. There is no on-campus medical clinic.
• On each visit, simply present a valid Lingnan Student Card by the time of treatment and pay a nominal fee of HK$20 which covers medications as well. You can also receive simple laboratory and X-ray tests upon presentation of a referral letter from a doctor.
• If you have special on-going prescription drug needs, please bring an ample supply of the medicine with you, or check with us to see if it is available in Hong Kong. Also ask your doctor for the name of the medicine (both the brand name and especially the chemical or generic name), and bring a copy of the prescription with you.

Student Dental Scheme

• The Dental Scheme covers full-time students’ dental treatment at nominal fees, and a preferential rate will be charged if students would like to receive other forms of dental treatments and services.
• Always remember to present a valid Lingnan Student Card prior to dental treatment. Otherwise, original price will be charged by the clinic.

Pre-arrival

Tuition

Generally speaking, you continue to pay tuition to your home institutions. For other mandatory fees such as hostel fee, the arrangement will be subject to the agreement signed between Lingnan and your home institution.

Estimate of Monthly Living Expenses

The following monthly expenses might serve as a general guideline:

It depends on your personal eating style, shopping habits and entertainment preferences. The expense on purchase of books is considered limited. Textbooks are generally not required in many classes, as you are normally assigned readings from books borrowed from the library. There are also no laboratory fees. However, it is advisable to allow an estimate of US$100-150 for books per term.

Currency Exchange Rate
The Hong Kong Dollar is pegged to the U.S. Dollar at a rate of HK$7.8 to US$1, although the rate varies slightly. Please check the latest currency exchange rates.

Arrangements upon Arrival

New incoming students are required to

• report to OGE upon arrival (normally one week before the start of classes). OGE will provide pick-up services on designated dates upon request.
• attend the Orientation Programme
• settle down in student hostels

Pre-departure Checklist

People tend to over pack because of insecurity and fear of the unknown. One big suitcase and one small carry-on bag would probably be good enough. Prior to your arrival, you may pack your luggage with the help of the following checklist. Subject to your own needs, it is advisable to pack only the essentials and the items that you would need immediately upon arrival. The following checklist is for your reference only.

If your medication is unavailable in Hong Kong, you may need to take enough for the entire semester abroad. But, if you do, be sure you have a doctor’s prescription, a letter from him why you are carrying so much, and clearly labeled medicine. If you do not follow these procedures you may have difficulties with the authorities.)

Airline tickets

You should carry the above travel documents with you until you arrive at Lingnan. They must not be packed with the luggage since you will need to present some of them to the immigration authorities before you have claimed back your luggage. Always check to be sure all items are with you before you leave the counters of airline, the immigration or customs.

For the most important of these documents, keep them with you at all times. You should make several photocopies of important documents (e.g. Student Visa/Student Permit, and entry visa stamp page in passport), leave a set at home and take several sets of them to Hong Kong if possible.
