Admission to Undergraduate Programmes - General

1. What undergraduate study programmes does Lingnan University offer?

The University offers undergraduate honours degree programmes in Chinese, Contemporary English Studies, Cultural Studies, History, Philosophy, Translation, Visual Studies, Business Administration and Social Sciences.    Top

2. How many study programmes can I apply for?

Applicants may indicate their preferences for up to three different study programmes. However, only one offer will be made to applicants if they are selected for admission.

Applicants can make one choice of study programme on each application they submit online. Applicants can make up to three choices of study programmes by submitting up to three different applications. Their fourth and subsequent applications will not be accepted by the Online Application System (System).

To indicate the preferences, applicants should select the first choice of study programme in the first application submitted and select the second choice of study programme in the second application submitted, and so on. The University will process the first successful application (upon payment) as the first choice of study programme, the second successful application as the second choice, and so on.    Top

3. Can I change my choice of study programmes after I have submitted my application?

Department(s) will start the selection process once an application is submitted, therefore, it is not possible to change the programme choice after submission(s). Applicants are advised to read carefully the Instructions for Completing Online Application and make thorough consideration accordingly before submission of their applications.    Top

4. What is the medium of instruction at Lingnan University?

Apart from language courses and courses in the Chinese and the Translation Departments, the University uses mainly English as the language of instruction, and this may be supplemented with Cantonese/Putonghua where appropriate.    Top

5. What are the admission requirements?

Applicants must have fulfilled the General Entrance Requirements and the Programme Entrance Requirements stipulated for individual study programme they choose. The University may also consider other acceptable qualifications for applicants who possess other qualifications. For details, please refer to the Undergraduate Prospectus.    Top

6. When is the application period?

The application period for admission was closed. Online applications received after 31 March 2012 will be regarded as late applications. Late applicants have a lower chance of being admitted. Late applications till 10 July 2012 can only be submitted online.    Top

8. Can I update personal information or provide additional supporting documents after I have submitted my application?

In support of applications for admissions, applicants are advised to select the most relevant supporting documents to be provided.

Applicants can provide additional supporting documents after they have submitted their applications. Applicants may login to the System and upload the supporting documents once ready or send us the information or documents by email (UGadm@LN.edu.hk) or by fax ((852) 2572 5178 or (852) 2454 4379) or by post (Admissions Office, the Registry, Lingnan University, 8 Castle Peak Road, Tuen Mun, Hong Kong) as soon as they can. Please note that the deadline to upload additional supporting documents is 10 July 2012 as the System will close accordingly.

For any additional documents submitted via email/fax/post, the Registry will upload them to the System within 7 working days. Applicants are advised to check the uploading status via the System and not to contact the Registry within the said timeframe.

Before submission of application, if applicants need to change the data stored in the System, they may amend/update and save data directly via the System. Yet, after submission of application, they should inform the Registry by email (UGadm@LN.edu.hk) with proof of amendment/update immediately. Please quote the application number and your full name in all enquiries and correspondence with the University.     Top

9. What should I do if I forget my login ID or password after I have submitted an online application?

If applicants have forgotten their login ID or password after they have submitted online applications, they may click "Forget Login ID/Password" on the System and enter their email address (same as the email address they have entered in the section of Personal Information in the System). The login ID and password will be sent to applicants via email shortly.    Top

10. How much is the application fee?

For 2012-13 Academic Year:

11. How can I pay the application fee?

Online Application
Applicants can settle the application fee by using a VISA or MASTER credit card. They will receive an acknowledgement by email once they have paid and submitted their applications online.    Top

12. How much is the tuition fee?

The tuition fees for 2011-12 academic year are HK$42,100 and HK$100,000 for local and non-local students respectively. Fees for 2012-13 are under review. Tuition fees are normally payable in two equal instalments before the start of the first and second terms of an academic year.    Top

13. How much is the hostel fee?

The hostel fee for 2012-13 academic year excluding the summer term ranges from HK$7,750 to HK$10,500 (subject to confirmation) per year.     Top

14. Are there any other intakes apart from the September intake?

There is only one intake in every September.   Top

15. How many terms are there in each academic year?

The University academic year starts at the beginning of September and ends at the end of August in the following calendar year. The academic year consists of two terms, each covering approximately 15 weeks of academic activities, and there may be an intensive summer term usually of a shorter duration.    Top

16. How many credit units can I take per term?

The normal study load of a full-time student in a term should be in the range of 15 to 18 credits and the maximum study load in an academic year should be 33 credits.    Top

Overseas, Taiwan and Macau Applicants

17. Who are non-local applicants?

Non-local applicants are persons entering Hong Kong for the purpose of education with a student visa/entry permit* issued by the Director of Immigration of the HKSAR Government. Applicants having the following documents below are NOT considered as non-local applicants:

- Hong Kong Permanent Identity Card
- one-way permit for entry to Hong Kong
- entry visa/permit for quality migrants or capital investment entrants

Chinese Mainland applicants applying for admission on the strength of the Joint Entrance Examination for Universities in PRC (Gao Kao) in 2012 should visit the Mainland Admissions website for details.

* (subject to confirmation of the HKSAR Government) including but not limited to holders of work visa, dependant visa, graduates under "Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates" (IANG), etc.     Top

18. Are there any scholarships or financial assistance for non-local students?

Non-local students are not eligible for Hong Kong government grants or loans. However, as non-local applicants (other than Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland citizens), they may want to consider applying for our Non-local Student Scholarships.   Full Scholarship (covering tuition, hostel and other academic and living expenses), Tuition Scholarship or Half-tuition Scholarship per academic year will be awarded to successful applicants.  Each Scholarship is offered on an annual renewable basis and is tenable for a period of up to 3 or 4 years (depending on the curriculum), subject to continued outstanding academic performance.

Late applications for Non-local Student Scholsrships will be considered on availability basis.

20. Is there any English language requirement for non-local students?

If the native language of applicants is not English, they may be required to fulfil the minimum English language requirement for admission listed below:

- a minimum of Grade C in English in the GCE O-Level or GCSE Examination or an equivalent public examination; or

- a TOEFL score of 213 in the computer-based test, or 550 in the paper-based test, or 79 in the internet-based test; or

- an IELTS overall band score of 5.5.

If the public English examination (e.g. IELTS) result of applicants is not available at time of application for admission, they can be submitted to the University via the System or by fax ((852) 2572 5178 or (852) 2454 4379) or by email (UGadm@LN.edu.hk) or by post to Admissions Office, the Registry, Lingnan University, 8 Castle Peak Road, Tuen Mun, Hong Kong as early as possible. Applicants can arrange for their TOEFL result to be sent directly to Lingnan University (university code: 9303).    Top

21. What is the difference between Letter(s) of Reference and Confidential Report?

In support of application for the Non-local Student Scholarships, applicants should provide letter(s) of reference on their non-academic performance and at least one Confidential Report. The letter of reference must be in hard copy on official letterhead, signed and dated by the person providing the recommendation on applicants' non-academic performance. Meanwhile, they should invite their school principal(s)/academic referee(s) to complete and send the Confidential Report in a sealed envelope to Admissions Office, the Registry, Lingnan University, 8 Castle Peak Road, Tuen Mun, Hong Kong.    Top

22. Are there any student hostels for non-local students? How much is the hostel fee?

Non-local students will normally be offered a residential place during their entire period of study at Lingnan University. The hostel fee for 2012-13 academic year excluding the summer term ranges from HK$7,750 to HK$10,500 (subject to confirmation) per year.    Top

23. What should I do if my supporting documents are not in English/Chinese?

For application to be considered, applicants should submit officially translated copies of the documents certified by the issuing institutions/relevant authorities, together with photocopies of the documents.    Top

24. Will there be any interviews?

Admission criteria for different programmes vary and applicants may either be admitted directly or shortlisted for interview to determine their eligibility for admission. For some programmes, applicants may also be required to take an oral and/or written test. If an interview is required, the University will inform applicants by phone, email or by post. For non-local applicants, interviews may be conducted by phone or through tele-conferencing.    Top

25. How do I know that the University has received my application?

Applicants are advised to print/save a copy of completed application form submitted for retention. An acknowledgement with an assigned application number will be sent to the applicants by email after they have submitted the application. If applicants do not receive any acknowledgement email after submission of application, please contact the Registry at UGadm@LN.edu.hk.

26. When will I have the application result?

Applicants will be informed by phone, email or by post between April and July 2012 if they are shortlisted for an interview (where necessary), or given an offer/conditional offer of admission. Successful applicants will usually be informed between June and August 2012. Applicants shall assume their applications unsuccessful if they do not receive our notification by 14 September 2012.    Top

27. Will I be admitted to the 3-year or 4-year curriculum?

Applicants are not required to indicate which curriculum they are applying. They will be considered and suitably admitted to the appropriate curriculum according to their education background and qualifications.    Top

28. Can I apply for admission to Year 2?

The University adopts a credit-based system in undergraduate studies. An applicant who has passed public, professional, or other examinations recognised by the University or has successfully completed a course at an appropriate level (for example, a Higher Diploma or Associate Degree programme) offered by the University or another tertiary institution may apply for credit transfer/course exemption.

A student who is granted a transfer of 21 credits or more upon admission is classified as a 'Year 2' student. The number of credits transferred depends on whether an applicant has completed courses which correspond to (and at comparable levels as) the courses in the study programme concerned at Lingnan University. However, a student normally may not be granted more than 50% of the required number of credits for the academic award.    Top

29. How can I apply for credit transfer or course exemption? How many credits can I transfer?

If an applicant submits an online application and has qualifications from higher education institutions (such as Associate Degree, Higher Diploma, etc.) and wishes to apply for credit transfer/course exemption upon admission, please complete an Application for Credit Transfer/Course Exemption form. Please read the instructions of the form carefully before apply. When an applicant completed the form, please upload it, together with copies of academic results, using “Uploading Supporting Documents” function of the System.  Top

30. What is the difference between course exemption and credit transfer?

When a student is granted credit transfer for a course, the student will be exempted from taking a similar course offered by the University and he/she will be granted with equivalent credits.

When a student is granted course exemption for a course, the student will be exempted from taking a similar course offered by the University. However, credits are not granted, and he/she needs to take another course to make up for the total number of credits required for graduation.    Top

31. How and when will the student visa be processed?

The University will assist non-local students to apply for a student visa upon admission. Students will be informed of the details of visa application if they are offered admission to one of the undergraduate programmes.    Top

32. Can I work while I am studying at Lingnan University?

According to the Immigration Department of the HKSAR Government, full-time non-local students of programmes at degree level or above whose study period is not less than one academic year may take up part-time on campus employment, as well as full-time summer jobs on or off campus. Working hours, however, shall not exceed 20 hours per week, and that any unused hours cannot be rolled over from one week to another. As for summer employment during the period from 1 June to 31 August, there is no restrictions on the work hours/type/location of part-time employment. The conditions have also been listed clearly in the "No Objection Letter" issued by the Immigration Department to all successful student visa applicants.    Top

33. Can I stay in Hong Kong after graduation?

According to the Immigration Department of the HKSAR Governement, full-time non-local graduates of programmes at degree level or above may apply to stay and work in the HKSAR. Under the "Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates" (IANG), full-time non-local graduates can apply for 12 months' stay upon graduation without first securing an offer of employment upon application. Successful applicants are free to take up and change employment during their permitted stay. Please visit the website of the Immigration Department for latest information.    Top
