Admission to Undergraduate Programmes - General

1. What undergraduate study programmes does Lingnan University offer?

The University provides undergraduate honours degree programmes in Chinese, Contemporary English Studies, Cultural Studies, History, Philosophy, Translation, Visual Studies, Business Administration and Social Sciences.

2. What is the medium of instruction at Lingnan University?

Apart from language courses and courses in the Chinese and the Translation Departments, the University uses mainly English as the language of instruction, and this may be supplemented with Cantonese/Putonghua where appropriate.

3. What are the admission requirements?

Applicants must have fulfilled the General Entrance Requirements and the Programme Entrance Requirements for programmes they choose. The University may also consider other acceptable qualifications for applicants who possess other qualifications. For details, please refer to the Undergraduate Prospectus or this website.

4. How much is the tuition fee?

The tuition fees for 2010-11 academic year are HK$42,100 and HK$80,000 for local and non-local students respectivity. Tuition fees are normally payable in two equal instalments before the start of the first and second terms of an academic year.

5. How much is the hostel fee?

The hostel fee for 2010-11 is HK$9,000 per year (excluding the summer term).

6. How many terms are there in each academic year?

The University academic year starts at the beginning of September and ends at the end of August in the following calendar year. The academic year consists of two terms, each covering approximately 15 weeks of academic activities, and there may be an intensive summer term usually of a shorter duration.

7.How many credit units can I take per term?

The normal study load of a full-time student in a term should be in the range of 15 to 18 credits and the maximum study load in an academic year is 33 credits.

JUPAS Applicants

8. Who are JUPAS applicants?

JUPAS applicants are applicants who apply for admission through the Joint University Programmes Admissions System. Applicants should apply through JUPAS if they belong to one of the following categories:

Either (a) Current secondary school students in Hong Kong sitting for the HKALE in 2010 (referred to as “school applicants”). All school applicants applying for admission MUST join the JUPAS scheme via their respective schools, regardless of whether they are sitting for the HKALE as school candidates or private candidates.

or (b) “Non-school applicants” who

    (1) have either already obtained HKALE results or expect to obtain necessary results in the 2010 HKALE as a private candidate that would make the eligible for admission to the study programmes offered via JUPAS

AND

    (2) are not currently enrolled in a full-time or sandwich bachelor's degree programme offered via JUPAS in one of the nine participating institutions.


All JUPAS (school or non-school) applicants should submit their application for programmes at Lingnan University online at the JUPAS website.

9. How can I apply for and obtain the latest information about JUPAS admissions?

For latest details of JUPAS admissions, please refer to the latest JUPAS Guide or visit the JUPAS website.

10. Will there be any interviews for JUPAS applicants? When will they be held?

Admission criteria for different programmes vary and applicants may either be admitted directly or be short-listed for interview to determine their eligibility for admission. For some programmes, applicants may also be required to take an oral and/or written test. If an interview is required, the University will inform applicants by phone, email or by post.

Interviews for JUPAS applicants, if any, will normally be held in July after the HKALE results are released.

11. Are all my HKALE results considered, even if I have attempted public examination more than once? Will there be any penalty for repeated subjects?

The best results from a combination of all AL and AS subjects in HKALE of applicants will be considered and there is no penalty or marks deducted for repeated sittings of a subject. An AS level subject is counted as 0.5 AL subject in the calculation of scores in the prioritising process.

12. Can I use other English results as a substitute for the HKALE AS Level Use of English requirement?

For JUPAS applicants, only AS Level Use of English result will be considered. Other English qualifications (such as IELTS) will only be considered as a reference but not a substitute.

13. Will I be re-considered if I decline my offer in the JUPAS Main Round?

If applicants do not accept an offer in the Main Round, they will be regarded as having declined their offer and they will NOT be re-considered for admission to any other study programmes offered under JUPAS in the same year.

14. What are the admission scores of the JUPAS admittees?

The admission scores of JUPAS admittees to Lingnan University in the last ten years are available at here. Please note that the information is for reference only and should not be used to predict the chance of admission to any programme in subsequent years.
