Brief description:  An application of an intervention for identifying, gathering and coaching a group of primary school pupils to improve their social competence and spoken English. Using an encounter group work model the pupils were put through writing; story telling; choral speaking; singing; drama; simulation/ role play of daily conversation in various settings, e.g., clinic; kitchen; concert; and field trips. All the activities were related to a main theme of ‘defining poverty’. The pupils were working with an older person and a university student in a group, and was required to present the results in English to the rest of the participants at the end. The programme was proven to be effective.

Brief description:  Adopting combined methodologies (interviews and focused groups), the study aims to address the changes in society as well as the impacts on the family brought about by the advancement of the society including urbanization; the current research put emphasis on developing a set of outcome indicators to measures the intergenerational solidarity in Hong Kong; then use the indicators developed to evaluation the effectiveness of the CIIF funded projects; to identify critical factors that facilitates the implementation of intergenerational solidarity programmes; and, to recommend policy directions for future development of intergenerational solidarity projects.

Brief description:  The study is an action research which attempts to explore the group dynamic and interaction between older persons and the younger age people. Through field studies, it is expected to generate the ideas or insights to build up models for intergenerational communications and enhance the happiness of individuals through working together in the farming programmes. Hence, the present research adopts participatory action research approach in which the researchers are also as programme participants in farming activities.

Brief description:  The project was an extension of the UGC Interface project in promoting healthy ageing and positive interaction between the secondary pupils (N= 279) and the elderly people (N=240) (Note that the actual numbers of participants were larger as some did not return the questionnaire).  Three measurements were taken at the beginning of the programme, at the point of completing all the training courses and at the end of the programme. Four aspects were measured: interaction skills, self-confidence, knowledge on ageing and health and knowledge on computer/internet applications. The study was designed to have a second stage in which 50 randomly assigned pupils were followed to see if the skills and knowledge learned would be further developed.

 

Bridging the Generation Gap: Understanding the views of our elders through 1960’s film reviews for sexual and marital manifestations

Brief description:  Groups of elderly and pupils (primary 6 to secondary 3) were shown a films shot in the 60s called “mother and daughter”. The story was about freedom of love, arranged marriage and parental authority. Participants were invited to have a discussion after the film on these themes. Results showed that views from the older generation and the younger generation were quite different. However, acceptance and compromised increased after the exchanges in the discussion, showing that direct and rational discussions could bride the generation gaps.

Brief description:  To explore the effects of service learning among selected students doing undergraduate programmes in Lingnan University; to provide a service learning opportunities for undergraduate students in Lingnan University; to provide a befriending service to South Asian pupils (e.g. Filipino, Indonesian, Indian, Nepalese and Pakistani) in local primary schools.

Brief description:  An action-evaluation research in investigating the effectiveness of involving the young students in promoting an aspect of healthy ageing using quasi-experimental design. Five groups of F.2 students involving in 5 models of programme inputs. Effectiveness are measured by established performance indicators in self-confidence, interaction between elderly and youth, social competence and relationship-related quality of life. Total individuals amounting to 200+ students and 100+ elderly people.
