Brief description: A quasi-experimental design to see if a mixed mode of service of Enhanced Home & Community Care Service is more therapeutic to maintaining or improving the physical and cognitive functioning, quality of life and self efficacy of users as compared to the single home visit service mode. Sample included existing users and the newly admitted in HKFWS Shun Li Estate (Choi Hung) and Cheong Shan Estate (Tsuen Wan). All participants were screened with MMSE (≧10), BI (≧60), and MFAC (Category IV or above). Experimental subjects will be put through a one-time-a-week group treatment in Day Care Center (4 hours each time, of nursing and excise programs) over the span of 6 months. Observer-rated scales for physcial functioning (Five Time Sit to Stand Test; Hand Grip Power; Time Up and Go Test; Sollerman Hand Function Test), cognitive functioning (MMSE; DRS), psychological functioning (GDS), activity of daily living (BI), Quality of Life (HKQoLEs) and Self Efficacy (GSES) are used, ground staff are also recording for participants’ functioning and their interaction among group mates to see if corresponding changes were evident.

Brief description: As commissioned by Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS), we are undertaking a focus group study on the two elderly housing projects of HKHS. Through series of focus group discussion, engaging people of different ages, backgrounds and professions, they study shoulder the objective to reveal the vision of affordable elders on the two projects. The result of the pilot study is expected in February 2009, whereas formal administration will begin in March 2009.

Brief description:  An index will be developed based on this 2-stages study. The first stage is an in-depth interview with key policy makers from all relevant policy bureaus (over 20) for refining an instrument (i.e. questionnaire containing items related to demographic and other outcome indicators reflecting older resident’s life quality in Macao. The second stage involves a validation study to validate the same instrument in preparation for a country-wide survey to bench mark the life quality of these residents living in Macao.

Brief description:  The objectives of the evaluation study were to evaluation the Senior Citizen Residences Scheme (SEN) in terms of the satisfaction of its participants (tenants and their family) and also to provide empirical data and findings to the HK Housing Society regarding the future of the scheme. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were adopted in the evaluation study. A total of 500 residents (out of all about 1,000) were successfully interviewed.

Brief description:  The project is to develop a computerized service quality/ information system for residential care homes in Hong Kong and to evaluate the impacts of computerized management on service quality. Moreover, the research suggests implementation strategies for a better management information system (MIS) for residential care homes.

Brief description:  The project is an action research designing for whole person development programme guided by liberal art and moral education themes. Targets included pre-school and primary school children to senior secondary school students. The project would involve 60 teachers (kindergarten, primary and secondary) and through the magic, dance and drama for teaching the educators to promote the moral and liberal art education. Older persons will be involved as teaching assistants as well. The estimated benefits students would be over 500 people. Indicators for performance will be developed.

A Study of Mandiao (Mahjong) Activities among the Frail Elderly Homes and Hostels in Yan Chai Hospital

Brief description:  A multiple baselines quasi-experimental design to see if mahjong is therapeutic to maintaining or improving cognitive functioning. Sample included all those residents who could contemplate and willing to play mahjong from the 10 nursing homes managed under the Yanchai Hospital Social Services. All participants were screened with mild or moderate dementia, put through an intensive schedule of mahjong playings (two or four times a week, 1-2 hours in each play). Observer-rated scales for cognitive functioning (MMSE), memories (Digit-span), depression (GDS) and positive affect (happiness) were used, home staff were also recording for participants’ daily functioning t6o see if corresponding changes were evident.

Brief description:  The study explored the tripartite relationships between the formal carer, the informal carer (family carer) and the caree (i.e. the elderly person receiving care). Brief description:  This again is an action research looking at developing a model of smoking prevention. Use of elderly (N=20) people (who were smokers before) to teach the secondary school students (N=20) not to smoke. Brief description:  An action research project involving the programme workers in developing an instrument to measure effectiveness of their smoking prevention programmes, which included mass publicity, groups and case interventions. Guidelines and advices to conduct the evaluation were issued and discussed in a steering committee set up for this project, while programme workers acted like research assistants in data collection. This is a ‘skill transfer’ arrangement – in the sense that research and evaluation skills were taught to programme staff in doing this project.

Brief description:  The study employed a grounded theory approach to investigate what were expected from the enhanced home care services (EHCS) from different stake-holders’ perspectives. Initial criteria for recruits were frailty (limited mobility and very frail), age (65-74, and 75+), primary carers and front line EHCS providers. The initial results showed that the EHCS were not exactly matched with those expected by the users (elderly persons and their primary carers).

Brief description:  The study aimed at explore the applicability of a Chinese version of the WHOQoL (Old) with four purposively selected groups: healthy and young-old, frail and young old, healthy and old-old, and frail and old-old. Preliminary results showed that the instrument was valid.

 

Clinical Validation of the SHORT-CARE (Chinese Version): An Instrument for the Assessment of Psychological Symptoms, Dementia and Disability

Brief description:  The original SHORT-CARE instrument was translated into Chinese and back translated into English. A total of 67 cases were captured over a 18 months period. Each went through a thorough observer-rated assessment using the SHORT-CARE (Chinese) instrument. Results showed that the scoring structure and other performance of the instrument were comparable to the original qualities.
