Description

This Hong Kong Cantonese opera classic was written by the late renowned playwright Mr. Tong Dick-sang. Four acts of "Dropped Hairpin, Lantern Shadows", "Farewell at the Yang Pass", "Encounter with the Chivarous Swordsman" and "Reunion of Sword and Haorpin" will be performed.

Synopsis

Li Yik, a talented scholar of the Tang Dynasty, encounters the beautiful Fok Siu-yuk during the lantern festival one night. The two are a real match made in heaven. Their love affair begins when Siu-yuk drops her purple hairpin, which is subsequently picked up and returned by Yik, who later proposes to Siu-yuk using the hairpin as a pledge of his devotion.

Coincidentally, the daughter of the powerful Grand Marshal Lo also meets Yik at the lantern festival and is attracted to him. Knowing his daughter’s admiration for Yik as well as appreciating Yik’s talent himself, Lo wants Yik to marry into his family. However, having plucked the laurels at the imperial examinations, the proud and unyielding Yik declines Lo’s offer, which angers Lo. Consequently, Li is sent away to guard the frontier as punishment. When he is summoned to return after three years, Lo again coerces Li to marry his daughter and even detains him in his residence.

Li has written to Siu-yuk when he is away but his letters never reach her. Hearing no news of her husband, Fok falls ill and is plunged into poverty. Eventually, a 'Swordsman in Yellow' appears and does justice to help reunite the couple against all odds.
