Username & Password

 

Some of our IT services, such as Intranet Portal, Webmail, Samba (network storage), WebCT, wireless network, VPN, etc. are password-protected. You need login with your Lingnan useranme and password in order to access these services. It is useful to know the format of the username, how to change the pasword, what to do if the password is wrong, whether the username can be changed and how to well protect your account.


Username

Username is limtied to a maximum of 15 English characters and it is generated in one of the following 2 ways:

  • "Preferred Firstname" + "Surname if you provide a "Preferred Firstname"
  • "Official Given Name" + "Surname" if you do not provide a "Preferred Firstname"

E.g., if your surname is "Chan" and given name is "Tai Man", your Lingnan username would be "taimanchan" if you do not provide a "Preferred Firstname". If you provide a "Preferred Firstname", say "peter", your Lingnan username would be "peterchan" instead.

In case of the username having been occupied, a sequential number will be appended to the username. E.g., "taimanchan2" or "peterchan14" would be assigned in our previous example. Please also be reminded that there should not be any vulgar words or punctuation characters in the username.


Change Password

As part of the university's increased information security, it is compulsory to change your password at least every 3 months. The format of the password needs to be:

  • Minimum of 8 characters in length
  • Mixture of alphabetic and numeric characters (at least one of each)
  • Different from your last 6 passwords

Once your password is changed, you can use this new password to access our various IT services again.

Forgot Password

The following guidelines and procedures apply to all staff and students who have lost/forgotten their passwords and need to reset their passwords.


For Students

  1. You should visit the ITSC office (MB 401) in person within office hours, and present your valid student ID card to ITSC staff for validation.
  2. In case you are not on the campus or you cannot attend in person, you can scan or take a photo of your student ID card (with your photo and barcode being clearly seen) and email it to itsc@ln.edu.hk.  Please also state clearly your username and contact phone number in the email.  Your password will be reset after your identity had been verified and ITSC staff will notify you after the password is reset.

For Staff

  1. You should fill-in and sign the "User Request Form" to reset your password.  Please send a copy of your staff ID card, together with the completed form, either by fax, email or visit the ITSC office in-person at MB401.
  2. Your password will be reset after your identity has been verified.

For Departmental Accounts

To reset the password for a departmental account, you should fill-in the "User Request Form", with the approval of your department/unit head, and send the form back either by fax, email or visit the ITSC office in-person at MB401.


Change Username

  • For new staff, they may submit their "Preferred Firstname" on the "Personal Particulars Form". The username will be generated based on the "Preferred Firstname" or "Official Given Name", together with the surname. The new email address will also be changed accordingly.
  • For newly-admitted students, they may apply for change of username in the beginning of the first academic semester. Detailed instructions will be sent to each eligible student individually.

    Important Note: The username can only be changed once. Please be careful when you decide your username.
  • For returning staff, username cannot be changed, but they can request for an email alias via "User Request Form".

Protect Your Account

You are recommended to change your password regularly and keep your password to yourself only.

Here are some tips for you to choose your password. The password is case sensitive. You may mix cases to make it more secure.

  • The password should contain BOTH numbers and alphabets.
  • The password should be made up of at least 6 alphanumeric characters.
  • DO NOT use your name or common words as your password.

Please also be reminded that you should never share your account or disclose your password to others.
