Environmental Policy

 

The Policy

Lingnan University is committed to promote environmental preservation, protection and enhancement and to implement government’s environmental improvement policies in our community. The University’s operations are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner and meeting our commitments and will take all reasonable measures to implement and improve environmental policies in order to achieve optimum energy conservation in its buildings and operations, and can also conserve other natural resources by good practices of waste minimization.

 

Terms of Reference

The existing Health and Safety Committee in the University is to be restructured and renamed as Health, Safety and Environment Committee and its responsibilities are to be extended to include the following issues regarding environmental preservation, protection and enhancement:

1.        Draft, formulate and implement action plans to comply with the latest environmental protection legislation.

2.        Train and increase the environmental awareness and consciousness among staff and student and maintain a high standard of environmental quality.

3.        Collect and distribute means for access to information on environmental messages for the development of environmental initiatives through various channels and approaches.

4.        Take proactive measures to implement mechanism for effective green housekeeping practices and energy efficient measures.

5.        Review the environmental policy on a regular basis.

 

Sustainable Development Measures

 

On-Going Energy Conservation Measures

 

A.        Energy saving measures

1.          Encourage staff and student to conserve energy wisely.

2.          Use of natural ventilation and lighting to reduce energy consumption for air-conditioning, ventilation and lighting in building.

3.          Set air conditioning temperature at 25.5°C or turn it off when the area will not be occupied.

4.          Reduce lighting to minimum required for illumination.

5.          Adoption of energy efficient features and renewable energy technologies in installations wherever practicable, e.g. energy efficient fluorescent tubes.

6.          Install occupancy sensors in areas where lighting usage is not so frequent.

7.          Switch off all electrical appliances not in use.

8.          Heat wheel for heat energy reclaim of exhaust air installed in Simon and Eleanor Kwok Building.

9.      Use of renewable energy technologies, such as solar park lighting in Simon and Eleanor Kwok Building, Wong Hoo Chuen Hall and Wu Jieh Yee Hall.

10.    Install green roof system with an area of about 2,300 m2 in roof top of various buildings within the campus, i.e. New Academic Block, Amenities Building, Patrick Lee Wan Keung Academic Building, Wong Administration Building and Student Activities Centre in the Outdoor Sports Ground.

11.    Timer and weather sensors for irrigation system in green roof system.

12.    Acoustic window installed in Simon and Eleanor Kwok Building, Dorothy Y.L. Wong Building, B.Y. Lam Building, Leung Kau Kui Building and Ho Sin Hang Building.

13.    The energy audit was carried out by CLP in November 2011. The result was found satisfactory in respect of the performance of all existing electrical appliances, system, equipment and plant used in the University.

14.    The carbon audit study was carried out by Specialist Consultant in October 2011. The purpose of the audit is to present the overall greenhouse gas (GHG) performance and the analysis of individual systems over the last three years reporting period. Based on the report prepared by the Specialist Consultant, there was a gradual decrease in GHG emissions throughout the period.

B.         Paper saving measures

1.      Use email and intranet for communication and dissemination of information.

2.      Print on both sides of paper.

3.      Use blank side of used paper for drafting, photocopying and printing documents.

4.      Reuse old envelopes and loose minutes/use transit envelopes if required.

5.      Collect waste paper for recycling.

 

C.        Recycle measures

1.          Encourage all staff and students to save resources and minimize generation of waste.

2.          Adopt the recycling approach whenever feasible.

3.          Establish recycling bins/points for the collection of recycling of paper, plastics bottle, aluminum can, batteries and toner cartridges.

4.      Adopt rainwater collection system for irrigation.

D.        Indoor Air Quality

 

1.    No smoking policy has already been implemented within the University campus in accordance with the latest legislation.

2.    On site indoor air quality inspections are regularly carried out in order to monitor and improve, if necessary, the air quality.

3.    Good Class IAQ Certificates were obtained in various buildings.
