1. ¡§Workshop on Spirituality, Value, and Culture¡¨, on 22 June 2007 at Lingnan University

 The CPPS co-organised a workshop on ¡§Spirituality, Value, and Culture¡¨ with the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong Institute of Education and Lingnan University on 22 June 2007 at the Lingnan University. The workshop attempted to promote the cause of transcendental spiritual practice and included two round table discussions, one on promoting spiritual education in Hong Kong and one on a possible declaration that may eventually be submitted to the United Nations.

 

2. Press Conference on Health Care Financing in Hong Kong, 21, June 2007

 With the SAR Government about to publish its healthcare financing proposal, the public is very much concerned what it will do next. Following a recent proposal on health care financing conducted by Bauhinia Foundation Research Centre, Prof. Ho Lok Sang made a presentation on his proposal.  It was widely reported in local newspapers. We acknowledge with gratitude the support of the Public Affairs Office.

 

3. Conference on ¡§China and Korea: A New Nexus in East Asia?¡¨, 30-31 May 2007

 The CPPS co-organized an international conference entitled ¡§China and Korea: A New Nexus in East Asia?¡¨ with the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, Lingnan on 30-31 May 2007 at Lingnan University. The participants were from academia, business, the media and diplomatic circles based here in Hong Kong as well as from Korea and New Zealand.

4. ¡§Governments, Markets, and the Future of Capitalism¡¨ on 14-17 December 2006 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

The CPPS co-organized a three-day conference entitled ¡§Governments, Markets, and the Future of Capitalism¡¨ with the Hong Kong Economic Association during 14-17 January 2005 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This conference, with the support of six UGC funded universities, attracted many prominent Hong Kong academics in the economics, finance and business fields as well as business leaders and researchers from the private sector and officials from the HKSAR.

 

5. Conference on ¡§Lessons from History¡¨, 9-10 June 2006

The CPPS sponsored and co-organized an international conference entitled ¡§Lessons from History¡¨ with the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences, Lingnan on 9-10 June 2006 at Lingnan University. The conference has attracted both overseas and local scholars who came from different disciplines, including history, economics, political science. A special issue on Chinese Economic History will be published in the Pacific Economic Review while a book with the tentative title of ¡§In Search of a Democratic Model: the Asian Experience¡¨ is now in preparation following the conference.

 

6. Press Conference on Happiness Index in Hong Kong, 18, May 2006

A survey on ¡§Happiness Index for Hong Kong People¡¨ was conducted in April 2006. The findings were presented at a press conference on 18 May 2006 and then at the Conference on Quality of Life Research in Asia held 19-21 May 2006 in Hong Kong. The survey results have received widespread coverage in local newspapers. We acknowledge with gratitude the support of IHSS interdisciplinary research fund and the assistance of the Public Affairs Office.

 

7. ¡§Conference on Working Poor: Employed but Poor: How Public Policy Can Help the Working Poor in Hong Kong¡¨, 13, May 2006

CPPS co-organised an international symposium entitled ¡§Working Poor: Employed but Poor: How Public Policy Can Help the Working Poor in Hong Kong¡¨ with Oxfam Hong Kong on 13 May 2006 at the YMCA of Hong Kong on Salisbury Road. This conference attracted many local academics as well as interest groups including professional, business, employees, and from the labour organization and the government sector.

We invited Prof Stephen Machin from the University College of London, Dr. Jesus Felipe from the Asian Development Bank, Mr. David O¡¦Rear from Hong Kong General Chamber of Commence, Prof. Dennis McCann from CUHK, Mr. Lee Cheuk Yan, Legislative Councillor and Mr. Wong Kwok-Kin from Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions to make presentation. More than 100 participants attended the symposium.

8. ¡§Post WTO MC6 Forum¡¨, 21 January 2006

CPPS co-organised a forum entitled ¡§Post WTO MC6 Forum¡¨ with the Hong Kong Economic Association and Hong Kong People¡¦s Council for Sustainable Development on 21 January 2006 at the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commence. We invited Dr. K.W. Chan from Hong Kong General Chamber of Commence, Mr. C.Y. Chong from Oxfam Hong Kong, Ms. M.K. Yip from Trade and Industry Department, HKSAR to make presentation.

9. Conference on ¡§Progress, Happiness and Public Policy¡¨, 24-25 June 2005

 The Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences of Lingnan University held an international conference over the two days June 24 and 25, 2005. CPPS staff is involved in the organization of the conference. Sponsored by the Centaline Charity Foundation, the conference has attracted both overseas and local scholars who came from different disciplines, including psychology, economics, political science, anthropology, health sciences and medicine, and social work. 

 

10.  ¡§Pacific Rim Conference: Globlization and Regionalism¡¨, 14-16 January 2005

 CPPS co-organised a three-day conference entitled ¡§Pacific Rim Conference: Globalization and Regionalism¡¨ with the Western Economic Association International, Hong Kong Economic Association and University of Hong Kong during 14-16 January 2005 at the Hong Kong Gold Coast Hotel and Lingnan University. This conference, with the support of six UGC funded universities, attracted many prominent Hong Kong academics in the economics, finance and business fields as well as business leaders and researchers from the private sector and officials from the HKSAR.

 Nobel Laureate Prof James J. Heckman gave a keynote speech at the opening session. In addition, the Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Mr. Frederick Ma Si-hang gave the luncheon speech on the 14th January.
