Guest talk. Get into Art: Jeff Leung’s Journey in Curating
Mr Jeff Leung (Curator, MACAH curatorial project instructor

VISUAL STUDIES Image ALT

Jeff Leung is a veteran curator in Hong Kong. Since 2003, Jeff has curated and managed many art exhibitions and projects, which were held at venues ranging from art spaces and museums to public sites and community spaces. In this lecture, through an autobiographical perspective, Jeff will reflect on the curatorial practice of contemporary art in Hong Kong by reviewing his exhibitions or projects. His principal approach to curating is composed of three elements, ‘engaging with life,’ ‘enhancing the visiting experience,’ and ‘edutaining visitors.’ He believes that this approach not only represents a method of curating but also envisions the next phase of exhibition culture in Hong Kong. In addition to understanding the way he harnesses the power of curation and identifies himself as a curator, this lecture will invite you to engage in the global dialogue about curatorial practices and the value of art to society.

MACAH Master Class 2023-2024
Master Class. Sensing Borderlands: The Korea DMZ, Camptowns, and the Theatre of Repetition
Prof. Jung Joon Lee (Associate Professor, Theory and History of Art and Design, Rhode Island School of Design, USA)

VISUAL STUDIES Image ALT

Exploring what it means to practice photography in the normalized conditions of militarism, Jung Joon Lee’s forthcoming book Shooting for Change: Korean Photography after the War (Duke University Press, Spring 2024) treats the transnational militarism of Korea as a lens through which we may probe the officially and culturally sanctioned readings of images when returning to them at different times. In this lecture, Lee considers the visualization of the spaces of transnational militarism - the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and U.S. military camptowns in South Korea - that are, for most Koreans, imagined spaces beyond the sovereignty of South Korea in the name of peace keeping. Lee explores the unexpected paths of repetition via photographic representation: looking at the ways in which selected art and photography projects undo the national rhetoric of futurity prescribed in relentless adherence to, while seemingly oscillating between, anti-communist ideology and neoliberal desire.

Masterclass 3 - Taring Padi Collective and Art as Direct Political Practice
Dr Alexander Supartono (Lecturer, Edinburgh Napier University)

VISUAL STUDIES Image ALT

Founded in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, in 1998, the Taring Padi collective’s connective principle evolved at the interface of ideology and friendship and in parallel with the aim to utilise art as a tool for political education . Taring Padi’s presentation at Documenta 15 in 2022 was the collective’s first participation in a major international art event after twenty-three years of their existence. Whilst Taring Padi took Documenta 15 as a platform to further their political work, the audience’s reading, appreciation and examination of their artworks expanded beyond the specific historical context of their artmaking practice. This lecture will revisit, from an insider’s perspective, the negotiation between artworks as a form of political education and as objects of display. It will offer an overview of the collective’s three main artistic practices—woodcut prints, cardboard puppets and large-scale banners—to explain how their artworks were recontextualised in the context of Documenta 15. The lecture will also discuss the pictorial commonplaces that form the collective’s distinctive iconography.
