  • Accommodaton and Meals in Lingnan University
  • 1. What kind of accommodation in Lingnan University will be arranged?
    Accommodation for overseas applicants will be arranged upon request from 25 June to 1 July, 2017 (6 nights). Students will be assigned student hostels on a share-room basis at Lingnan University.

    2. What will be provided at the student hostel of Lingnan University?
    The size of a student room is 110 to 130 sq ft, with 2 single beds, 2 cabinets, 2 desks and chairs for double room. Free LAN, WIFI service and electricity are provided. Air-conditioning is included in the fee.  Linen Set (including a pillow, a pillow case and a bed sheet) is provided for summer school participants.

    3. Is the accommodation sex-segregated?
    In general, in each of the hostel blocks of Lingnan University, female student rooms are on the upper floors while male student rooms are on the lower floors. However, male and female students are sometimes mixed on the same floor but segregated into different wings.

    4. Are meals included in my course fees?
    The course will cover two meals (welcoming dinner and farewell lunch) during your studies. You are recommended to include the daily meal expenditure in your budget. University canteens are available and a variety of restaurants/food stalls/coffee shops are also located nearby.

  • There are three on-campus catering outlets available for students at the Amenities Building.
    - The Student Canteen on the ground floor offers all-day dining. A wide selection of snacks, set meals, and Chinese & Western cuisine is available.
    - The Café serves coffee, snacks and western style cuisine.
    - The Chinese Restaurant on the G/F provides another option of a comprehensive seasonal menu of Chinese cuisine and dim sum.
    Off-campus Meals
    Other than student canteens, a wide variety of restaurants and food stalls at reasonable price are also available. For example, McDonald's and Chinese style restaurants are located within walking distance from the main campus.

  • 5. How do I get to Lingnan University?
    Hong Kong International Airport is situated in Chap Lap Kok on Lantau Island. There are several ways to get to Lingnan University:
    - Airport Express Train and MTR from Airport to Siu Hong Station (West Rail). You could then take the bus K51 (to Fu Tai); or if you choose to walk, you could take Exit F, and you will arrive the campus in about 10 minutes.
    - If your budget allows, simply take a green taxi from the Airport directly to the University, the cost is about HK$300 and the traveling time is approximately 40 minutes.

    6. What is the voltage of electricity supply in Hong Kong?
    The electric voltage in Hong Kong is 220-240v, 50 cycles. If you bring with your electric appliances, make sure that they are 220-240v adaptable. It is advisable for you to buy hair dryers and other small electric appliances with switchable voltage in Hong Kong.

    7. How much cash should I bring with me? Should I bring traveler’s checks or personal checks? What about the use of credit cards?
    It is easy to cash traveler’s checks in Hong Kong. Credit cards are widely accepted in shops, restaurants and travel agencies in Hong Kong. (It is advisable to notify your credit card issuing bank that you will be in Hong Kong.) The Hong Kong dollar is the currency unit here. The exchange rate is approximately US$1 to HK$7.8. You may bring in enough cash for your initial personal and miscellaneous expenses. There is a mini bank on campus, at which you may open an account for easy management of your finances in Hong Kong.

    8. What is the weather in Hong Kong?
    Hong Kong has a subtropical climate with distinct season and the summer weather is usually hot and humid. Temperatures range from 26°C to 33°C. July is particularly a typhoon season. When a typhoon is approaching, warnings are broadcast on TV and radio, and signal indicates the storm's distance from Hong Kong. If a typhoon comes near (Signal 8), businesses and shops close down and flights may be cancelled.

    9. How much I need to pay for the Summer School?
    Hong Kong
    - Students from partnering institutions: HK$5,000 (including tuition, welcoming dinner, farewell lunch, field visit, local insurance and accommodation.)
    - Students residing Hong Kong without accommodation needs: HK$2,000 (including tuition, welcoming dinner, farewell lunch, field visit, and local insurance. Accommodation is not included.)

    United Kingdom
    GBP2,400 (approximate HK$23,000, including tuition, accommodation, meals, study tour, activities and airport transfers. Air tickets and insurance in the UK are not included.)
