Mission
| It is the
mission of the Economics Department of Lingnan University to offer courses
of an applied nature that will enable students to better understand
current affairs and policy matters, so they can assess the impact of
government policy, and that of demographic, technological, and social
changes on businesses and the daily lives of people, and can contribute to
policy debate intelligently. It is our vision to build up sufficient
international recognition for scholarship and service to Hong Kong and the
rest of the world that we will be well known as for our application of to
public policy, much like Chicago school is well known for its free market
economics.
¡@ Our vision is to build up a research and teaching Program in economics and public policy that has the following characteristics:

| The Lingnan Economics Department believes that undergraduate economics teaching should have two main objectives: to stimulate students' interest and thinking, and to demonstrate to students the power of economic analysis. In order to achieve these objectives, there is a need to focus more insight and intuition and less on intricate technicalities, more on context-based problem solving and less on pure mathematical manipulations. More advanced mathematical and technical training should be reserved for "specialist" courses for those who have adequate preparation and motivation to benefic from them. Accordingly, unless pre-designated as such specialist courses, all our courses will require no advanced mathematical calculations or manipulations. |

| The Economics Department at Lingnan University is a small community of active researchers and scholars. While we are academics having published across a whole range of highly respected journals, books, and book chapters, we also see ourselves as "economists of the world." Our research is down-to-earth and highly relevant to the welfare of Hong Kong people, China, and the human race. In particular, we conduct policy-relevant research on the labour market, on the housing market, on international financial markets, on industrial policy, on health policy, on social security and aging problems, and on population economics. Prof. Edward K.Y. Chen, President of the University and chair professor of economics, is an internationally renowned expert on economic development in Asia. Prof. Ho is an expert on Hong Kong and on policy design and analysis. Other members of staff are also experts in their respective fields. Overall, we have expertise in labour economics, industrial economics, development economics, economics of the family, cost benefit analysis, and agricultural economics. All members of our staff hold Ph.Ds from the U.S., the U.K., Germany, Canada, and Australia. | ¡@
