English Enhancement Programmes and Study Support Services at Lingnan

Lingnan University offers a number of different study support services and programs for its students. There are programs aimed at language proficiency and proficiency in writing, as well as support services that offer broader study assistance.

CEAL’S Writing Tutorial Service (WTS)

The WTS is a support service providing students with individual consultations on their writing. It is not a proof-reading/editing service, but more a systematic, personalized approach to help students identify their own areas of weakness. The aim of WTS is to encourage reflection and evaluation of writing through critical thinking and exploration, and to develop writing proficiency across the curriculum. You can find out more about this service by going to the CEAL home page (http://www.ln.edu.hk/ceal/) and clicking on ‘Writing Tutorial Service’. The WTS is located in the Information Commons (IC) area in the Library (MB 101)

Visiting Tutors

Each hostel on Lingnan University campus accommodates one Visiting English Tutor a year to facilitate an English speaking environment for students living on campus. The tutor will organize relaxed events such as English Language Movie Nights and Western Cooking Classes. Halloween and Thanksgiving are usually on the annual agenda as well. Moreover, the English tutors will be happy to help all residents in their hostels with homework or other English language acquirements students might be practicing for or struggling with, e.g. job applications/ interviews; speeches; tests. Students are encouraged to get to know their English tutors and take part in the activities catered by them.

Usually the visiting tutors organize joint events campus wide such as book-clubs and writing workshops. Students should keep an eye out for posters and advertisements for these events. In the second term every year, an English language drama production will be set up and tutors are usually involved here too. This school play provides an excellent opportunity for students to practice their spoken English in a fun and warm environment.

The English tutors have an office in the English Department, but no set office hours are scheduled. When students wish to talk to one of the tutors, he or she should simply contact the tutor to set up a meeting. If students wish to improve their spoken English and discussion skills, they should sign up for one (or more) of the many discussion groups and workshops that the visiting tutors cater for every week in the MLLC programme in the library.
