General Information on Appointments

Appointment
Appointments are normally made on a fixed-term contract basis initially for three years*, which may be renewed subject to the performance of the appointee.
(* Normally two years for appointment as Teaching Fellow and for appointments in the self-funded units.)
Passage and Baggage
An appointee from overseas is normally provided with an incoming passage to Hong Kong for the purpose of taking up a new appointment at the University. Normally, his/her spouse and dependent children are also covered. Baggage allowance will also be provided to a new appointee to contribute to his/her moving of personal effects to Hong Kong.
Salary
An appointee's commencing salary will be commensurate with his/her qualifications and relevant experience. There are usually different salary ranges for different levels of appointment. If an appointee's salary has not reached the ceiling of the range concerned, he/she will normally be eligible to be considered for a performance-based salary increment annually. All salaries are payable monthly in arrears.
Leave
Where applicable, a staff member can apply for annual leave, sick leave, maternity leave, conference leave, study leave, special leave and no pay leave according to the relevant regulations.
Terms Breaks and Leave for Academic Staff
To facilitate research and scholarly activities, an academic staff at or above the level of Assistant Professor may be away from campus (including deciding where to conduct his/her research and scholarly activities) during two term breaks each year (normally the winter break of 22 December to 10 January and the summer break of 15 June to 15 August, subject to revision by the University from time to time) without notifying or seeking any formal approval from the University, provided that no administrative or other duties have been assigned by the Head of Department, the departmental board or the University during the term breaks concerned. In addition, a staff member at or above the level of Assistant Professor will be entitled to annual leave in accordance with the provisions as contained in the Employment Ordinance, to be taken according to relevant University regulations and schedule, normally in the leave year during which such leave is accumulated. (The leave entitlement of an appointee on one of the Teaching Fellow / Language Instructor ranks will be different.)
Medical and Dental Benefits
An appointee is provided with medical benefits through a medical insurance scheme administered by the University. Depending on the duration of appointment, his/her spouse and dependent children are normally also covered by the scheme. Under the scheme, a comprehensive coverage of medical (for both out-patient and hospital benefits) and dental protection is offered.
Housing Benefits
An appointee at the level of Assistant Professor or above (or at the Associate Director rank or above for non-academic appointments) is normally provided with a cash allowance to help finance his/her accommodation needs. Depending on the level of appointment, the amount of the allowance varies. An appointee can make use of the allowance to supplement his/her renting or buying of an accommodation. Like elsewhere, housing expenses do vary depending on the location and size of the house/apartment concerned. Nice and reasonably comfortable houses/apartments at attractive prices are available in the areas near the University.
As from August 2005, a total of six staff quarters of around 800 sq. ft. (net) each have been made available to eligible new appointees as another form of housing benefits. Subject to the availability of staff quarters, eligible new appointees would be given an option to receive the cash allowance or take up residence in the staff quarters.

Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF)
An appointee (including those from overseas who enter Hong Kong for employment for more than 13 months), if not already covered by overseas retirement schemes, has to join the MPF scheme. The University and the appointee will each make monthly contributions into a mandatory provident fund on the basis of five percent of the appointee's income, subject to a maximum contribution of HK$1,000.- a month. Mandatory contributions can only be withdrawn in a lump sum at the age of 65. However, they could be withdrawn earlier when the scheme member has retired early and attained age 60 or permanently departs Hong Kong.
Gratuity
An appointee will normally be entitled to a gratuity. The gratuity for academic and senior administrative staff, including the University's contribution to the MPF, amounts to fifteen percent of basic salary and is payable every two years during the appointee's service with the University, with any balance paid on completion of the contract.
Retirement
The normal retirement age at the University is 65. Appointment however may be extended beyond the normal retirement age subject to approval of the University.
