  • Male Impersonation and Hong Kong Cantonese Opera: A Conversation with Koi Ming-faiDr Helen Grace
Guest: Ms Koi Ming-fai (Cantonese opera performing artist, specializing in male impersonation)
Host: Dr Li Siu Leung (Dept of Cultural Studies, Lingnan University)

The tradition of theatrical cross-dressing in Chinese opera can be traced back as far as the 12th century. At times male and female performers were not allowed to act together on stage, some performers were required to play characters of the opposite gender. It is fascinating that in the patriarchal society of old China, Chinese women were able to play leading heroic male roles on the opera stage.

Koi Ming-fai, a paragon of male impersonation in Hong Kong Cantonese opera and a media celebrity, specialises in playing military and scholarly male roles, will showcase her outstanding artistry in two works in the upcoming 2005 Hong Kong. Ms Koi will talk to us at Lingnan about the art of male impersonation and her views on the cultural significance of Cantonese opera in Hong Kong.

16th November 2005 (Wednesday); 18:00; Lingnan University Library

Co-presented by Lingnan University Library, Kwan Fong Cultural and Research Development Programme, Lingnan University
