Creative Belonging: A Qualitative Study of Trans-local Tactics of Cultural Negotiation among Ethnic Minority Youth in Hong Kong

Though there are over 340 thousand ethnic minorities (EM) living in Hong Kong, there is little known about their culture to mainstream society. While some research has been conducted recently to explore their situation, most of them concern their education and employment difficulties, few covers the different dimensions of the daily life of EM, and almost no research focuses on the translocal tactics of cultural negotiation among EM youth in Hong Kong which this 2-year project (Jan 2009 – Dec 2010) addresses.

Research Target

-     The project focuses on the three target groups of South and Southeastern Asian youth (16 to 25 years old) living in Hong Kong, namely Indian Nepalese and Pakistani. These groups represent the largest minority groups residing in Hong Kong, according to the Race Relations Unit of the HKSAR Government.

Research Objectives

-     To observe and analyze their participation in ethnic enclave economy, the consumption space catered to EM youth’s social life, eating and drinking habits ad popular culture consumption.

-     To explore the similarities and differences among the three target groups in terms of their views, assessments and tactics to develop cultural belonging in the past, present and future.

-     To study their peer/social relationship e.g. diasporic peer life, inter-ethnic friendship with local Chinese.

-     To examine the EM youth’s media use pattern, including their translocal media diet, creative seeking of information, creative distribution of media information among themselves and so on.
