University's New Spam Control System

SPAM detection and prevention

Lingnan's spam detection has been greatly enhanced with SOPHOS, a commercial spam appliance as our outer layer of spam defence. This device can stop up to 98.9% of spam, it also protects against email scams, including phishing attacks and unsolicited emails.

New approach - Quarantined spam messages

This is a new approach to handle user's false positive spam messages (genuine emails but regarded as SPAM emails), rather than delete SPAM:HIGH and deliver SPAM:MEDIUM to users at the system level, we have setup the system to quarantine all spam onto two quarantine 'Appliances'. Each user will then receive a daily summary email from each Appliance (i.e. at most two per day), listing all the SPAM received by an individual user in the last 24 hours by that Appliance.

Messages will be delivered at 7 am for one Appliance (sophos-am) and at 4 pm for the other Appliance (sophos-pm), so they have the appearance of delivering spam messages twice daily. A user can request to release all those false positive emails to be delivered. One major advantage of this arrangement is that spam will no longer be delivered to the user's folders, either the Inbox or Junk folder.

Important Note: Please remove any local spam filtering setup at your own PC, otherwise, the released email will be filtered to the Junk box by your local filter.
