Lingnan University welcomes new students from all over the world

Lingnan University held its 2018/19 Inauguration Ceremony on 22 August to mark the beginning of the new academic year and welcome hundreds of new students from all over the world.

Among the 600 freshmen who attended the ceremony to celebrate the beginning of their learning journey at Lingnan, 11% of them are non-local degree seeking students.  They come from 14 countries or regions including Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Mainland China, India, Kazakhstan, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Russia, Taiwan, USA and Vietnam.

In his welcoming address, President Leonard K CHENG encouraged the newcomers to take advantage of the incredible richness of opportunities and resources at the Lingnan Community.  “Learning at Lingnan goes far beyond the classrooms and textbooks.  To make the most of your student life, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, try new things and meet new people,” said President Cheng, who also introduced the University motto “Education for service” to the new students.  “A person educated in the liberal arts should be able to respond to societal needs and contribute to the betterment of the community,” he added.

The 3-day New Student Orientation started on the same day showcased the University’s development and campus life through sharing sessions, group activities and video clips.  Over 180 senior year Lingnan students were recruited to the University’s Peer Mentoring Programme, joining the ceremony to share their study and life experience at Lingnan and help freshmen adapt to the campus environment.
