4 Mar 2010
Lingnan University ("Lingnan" or "the University") today held a recognition ceremony in appreciation of the generous donations from Dr Wong Hoo Chuen and the Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation. Each donor has contributed an eight-digit amount of money in support of the construction of new student hostels at the University. The two student hostels will be named according to the wish of Dr Wong Hoo Chuen and the family of Dr Patrick Wu Po Kong.
Presiding at the ceremony, Professor Chan Yuk-Shee, President of Lingnan University, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Dr Wong Hoo Chuen and Dr Patrick Wu Po Kong, JP, Governor of Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation. “Over the years, Dr Wong and Dr Wu have been making perpetual contributions to Lingnan, and we are grateful for their continuous support. They exemplify the motto: ‘Once a Lingnanian, Forever a Lingnanian’.”
Sharing the University’s vision in liberal arts education, Dr Wu and Dr Wong hope their initiatives of making the donations could enrich hostel life on campus and assist the University to attain 100% residential rate by 2012 under the 3+3+4 academic reform. Besides, they also wish to encourage more generous support from alumni, philanthropists and the community that could help drive the whole-person development of students at the University.
Campus life, especially hostel life, is regarded as an essential part of liberal arts education. Currently, 65% of the University’s undergraduates live on campus. The hostels currently under construction, will offer 600 additional places and are scheduled for completion by 2011. The University is also planning to build another 400-place student hostel on the campus in order to reach 100% full residence by 2012.
