As part of its preparation for the four-year university system, Lingnan University is about to complete the construction of two new student hostels, Wong Hoo Chuen Hall and Wu Jieh Yee Hall, which will provide about 700 hostel places in early 2012.
A topping-out ceremony was held at the new hostels today to commemorate their completion. Distinguished guests who attended the ceremony included the donors, Dr Wong Hoo Chuen and Dr Patrick Wu Po Kong, JP (representative of Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation); Mr Bernard Charnwut Chan, GBS, JP, Chairman of the University Council; Ms Sophia Kao, SBS, JP, Deputy Chairman of the University Council; Mr Ben Wong Chung Mat, MH, JP, Treasurer of the University Council and Prof Chan Yuk-Shee, President of Lingnan University.
Speaking on behalf of Dr Wong Hoo Chuen and Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation, Dr Wu stressed the importance of hostel life, “Living on campus will provide students with more opportunities to meet and mingle with other students from various cultures and backgrounds, expand their social circles and sharpen their interpersonal and communication skills, which are all essential to their future development.”
Located on Tuen Kwai Road adjacent to Fu Tai Estate in Tuen Mun, the new hostels are scheduled to be ready for accommodation in early 2012. In addition to the 1,500 existing places, the student accommodation rate of Lingnan University will be increased from 65 per cent to 85 per cent. Even with the double cohorts of students to be admitted in September 2012, Lingnan University will maintain its leading status of student accommodation among local universities.
Two hostels providing another 500 places are being constructed and scheduled to be open in early 2013. Lingnan University will then accomplish its strategic goal of providing full accommodation to all undergraduate students.
