Lingnan University welcomes 5,500 visitors on first Information Day
22 Oct 2011
About 5,500 visitors, mostly secondary students who will sit for the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examinations (HKALE) in 2012, attended the first of two Information Days. The total turnout for the two Information Days has exceeded 14,000.
Eager to seek information on Lingnan University’s undergraduate programmes and liberal arts education, visitors and prospective students flocked to information booths and briefing sessions organised by faculties and academic departments of the University. Administrative and supporting units such as the Office of Service-Learning, Office of Mainland and International Programmes, Information Technology Services Centre and the library provided the visitors with an overview of their respective programmes and service offerings. Games, performances and sharing sessions with current students and alumni were also organised to showcase the colourful campus life at Lingnan. Lingnan University President Chan Yuk-Shee, Associate Vice-Presidents Chan Tsang-sing, William Lee and Herdip Singh kick-start the first of the two Information Days this morning with robust beatings of the drum, gongs and cymbals before the lion dance. The opening ceremony was officiated by President Chan Yuk-Shee, who spoke on the importance of liberal arts education, “Lingnan University is the liberal arts university in Hong Kong. We are committed to groom young talents who have a critical mind and global perspectives, and are flexible and willing to take up responsibility. This is important because tertiary education nowadays should move away from training experts for specific professions and prepare young people for the challenges in the fast-changing world. What they learn at the university should equip them with the essential skills and qualities to explore and get ready for life in the future.” At Lingnan, the principles of liberal arts education are embedded in the curriculum design and the unique campus culture embracing elements such as the emphasis on hostel life and international exchange.
The Information Day tomorrow is mainly for students who will sit for the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) examinations. LU Sports Team won the 2nd runner-up of women's basketball and women's volleyball matches. The University also hosted the Jackie Chan Challenge Cup Inter-collegiate Invitation Tournament, an annual sports gala in which athletes from all local tertiary institutions flexed their muscles for glory and honour. All tournaments have now been completed with the final results as attached.
