Sad Loss of Professor Chan Yuk-shee

24 May 2017

Dear Lingnanians,

I am deeply saddened to inform you that our former President, Professor Chan Yuk-shee, passed away on 22 May 2017.

Professor Chan was a distinguished academic, dedicated educator, and a highly respected and visionary leader of Hong Kong's higher education sector.  He became the President of Lingnan University in 2007, when the landscape of the local higher education sector was undergoing pivotal changes.  During his six-year service at Lingnan, Professor Chan made invaluable contributions to the University and laid a solid foundation of liberal arts education for us to build upon. We shall forever be grateful to him.

The departure of Professor Chan is a great loss not only to his family and friends, but also to the Lingnan community and the education sector of Hong Kong.  His amiable and friendly character, his perseverance and professionalism, his outstanding service to the Hong Kong community, as well as his remarkable contributions to Lingnan University and the local higher education sector will be fondly remembered by all Lingnanians and beyond.  He will certainly be sorely missed by all of us.

On behalf of the Lingnan community, I have conveyed our heartfelt condolences and sympathy to Professor Chan's family.   Professor Chan's vigil will be held at Shou Shan Hall of the Hong Kong Funeral Home, North Point in the evening of 3 June 2017 (Saturday) from 5 to 9 pm.  The funeral ceremony will be held on 4 June 2017 (Sunday) at 11:00 am at the Hong Kong Funeral Home.

We learned from his family that Professor Chan had expressed his wish not to have other memorial services for him. To pay respect to Professor Chan, you are welcome to attend the above ceremonies.

Leonard K Cheng
President
