Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China. On July 1, 1997, China resumed the sovereignty over Hong Kong, ending more than 150 years of British colonial rule. The Sino-British Joint Declaration (1984) and the Basic Law of Hong Kong are designed to ensure Hong Kong’s lifestyle, political, economic, and judicial systems will remain unchanged for 50 years after reversion.
Because of its history and the geographical location, and with China’s accession to the World Trade Organization (2002), Hong Kong continues to serve as a gateway to the Mainland China, an international financial and business centre, and a transportation and communication hub for the world, particularly for the Asia-Pacific region.
Lying at the southeastern tip of the Mainland China, the SAR comprises Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. Hong Kong is a world-class cosmopolitan city with over 7 million people. Visitors will experience the energetic life made possible by the mixture of Eastern and Western cultures, and the traditions and way of life of a Chinese society. Hong Kong is the bridge to the global world and the Mainland China, offering opportunities to experience the fast-changing environment of China and other Asian regions. It is a place to enjoy, to experience and to explore.
Will have the opportunity to travel “across the border” to the Mainland China to experience a different Chinese culture, because Hong Kong is on the southeastern rim of the Guangdong province of China.
Will have the opportunity to travel to other Asian countries, such as Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, and many others, because Hong Kong is in the center of the Asia-Pacific Region.
Will have the opportunity to experience the most advanced technology, to receive up-to-date information and news from all over the world. Hong Kong is a window to the world.
Will meet new challenges you will never experience in your home country or in other English-speaking countries. Hong Kong is modern yet historic, combining Eastern and Western cultures.
Will make new friends from all over the world, because Hong Kong is such an international city.
The experiences and memories you will have of this study abroad experience in Hong Kong will last a lifetime and will be something that you will never forget.
