Why Hong Kong?

Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People’s Republic of China. On July 1, 1997, China resumed the sovereignty over Hong Kong, ending more than 150 years of British colonial rule. The Sino-British Joint Declaration (1984) and the Basic Law of Hong Kong are designed to ensure Hong Kong’s lifestyle, political, economic, and judicial systems will remain unchanged for 50 years after reversion.

Because of its history and the geographical location, and with China’s accession to the World Trade Organization (2002), Hong Kong continues to serve as a gateway to the Mainland China, an international financial and business centre, and a transportation and communication hub for the world, particularly for the Asia-Pacific region.

Lying at the southeastern tip of the Mainland China, the SAR comprises Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories. Hong Kong is a world-class cosmopolitan city with over 7 million people.
