Lawrence received his M. Phil. degree in politics & Ph. D. degree in Criminology in the University of Hong Kong. He has worked in political parties and tertiary institutions as policy researcher after graduation. He taught politics and sociology subjects in University of Macau from 2006-2008 and joined the Department in 2009.

Lawrence’s research interests mainly focus on public policies, criminal justice system, policing and public order management. He is a Honorary Fellow of the Centre for Criminology in the University of Hong Kong and currently engaged in several research projects on Hong Kong policing and comparative policing practices, including the professionalization of Royal Hong Kong Police from 1970-1990s; The transforming role of the policewomen in Hong Kong Police; Policing the Colonial Macau; Policing of First of May Rallies in the Macau SAR since 2000; and Policing of the World Trade Organization Sixth Ministerial Conference in 2005 and Beijing Olympics Equestrian Games in Kong, 2008.
