Under the current 3-year curriculum, the Faculty of Social Sciences with its three constituent departments (Economics, Political Science, and Sociology and Social Policy) offers a unique inter-disciplinary Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) Degree Programme in Hong Kong.

Lingnan’s BSocSc Programme is an integral part of the University’s mission to become an internationally recognized liberal arts university. We offer an inter-disciplinary programme that incorporates the four major social sciences disciplines of economics, political science, psychology and sociology, where students study local, regional and global affairs from a China-cum-Hong Kong Special Administrative Region perspective.

We provide students with a broad and coherent intellectual base for understanding various contemporary political, economic and social issues, especially those related to public and social policy. The five streams of study provide the interdisciplinary perspective of generalists, while four possible discipline concentrations offer an additional option for students to become specialists in a specific direction.

Through service-learning, field trips and guest lectures/seminars, students have opportunities to experience the practical and theoretical integration of the courses. Language training and general education courses are also integral to our Programme, as they develop students’ language competence, logical and critical thinking, as well as cultural and historical awareness.

At the graduate level, the Social Sciences Programme offers training at the MPhil and PhD levels. These graduate programmes, by research, covers areas in (a) economic and political aspects of international and Asian Pacific affairs, especially as they may bear on Hong Kong (b) Social issues and public policy analysis, particularly research that offers insight about how to tackle ongoing and impending problems that will affect us.
