Rules and Regulations for Student
Residents of Student Hostels
II. In
each student hostel there will be a Student Hostel Association, the members of
which shall be all the residents of the hostel.
III. Residents
who have not occupied their assigned bed spaces by 5:00 p.m. one day prior to
the first day of the new residential academic year or have not made arrangements
with the Student Services Centre for late arrival will not be guaranteed a place
in the hostel.
IV. Student
Hostel Activities
A. The
Hostel Orientation Programme is an important function in the hostel calendar.
Residents are required to attend and be involved in this function unless the
function clashes with residentsˇ¦ academic obligations. Prior approval should be
obtained from the Warden concerned for absence from this event.
V. Cooking
is not allowed in student hostels.
VI. Parking
within the hostel areas is not allowed except in very special circumstances with
prior approval.
VIII. Residents
may not switch assigned rooms without the prior approval of the University.
IX. Residents
must not stay in the hostel areas occupied by the opposite sex between midnight
and 07:00 a.m. the following morning in hostels B, D and F and between 11:00
p.m. and 7:00 a.m. the following morning in hostels A, C and E.
X. Possession
or use of illegal substance/s is strictly prohibited. Consumption of alcohol is
not allowed in hostel areas.
XI. Residents
should scan their student ID cards before entering the Hostel. Loss of a student
ID card or a temporary resident ID card should be promptly reported to the
Registry and Facilities Management Division respectively. Security officers are
authorized to check residentsˇ¦ temporary resident ID/ student ID/ HKID cards if
deemed necessary. Other residents who access the Hostel between midnight and
07:00 a.m. the following morning in hostel B, D and F and between 11:00 p.m. and
7:00 a.m. the following morning in hostel A, C and E are required to get prior
permission from the Warden of that block.
XII. Residents
should be considerate towards one another and refrain from making noise late at
night or early in the morning, particularly between midnight and 07:00 a.m. the
following morning.
XIII. Residents
should be properly dressed in all public areas of the hostel.
XIV. All
forms of gambling are strictly prohibited.
XV. Smoking
indoors (including corridors and staircases) is forbidden.*
XVI. No
pets are allowed in student hostels.
XVII. All
residents are expected to keep their rooms clean and tidy. Corridors and fire
fighting equipment must remain free of all obstacles. Smoking lobby doors should
be kept closed.
XVIII. Any
damage to walls and furniture in hostels is not allowed.
XIX. In
order to conserve energy, residents are requested to turn off lights, fans and
air-conditioners when they leave their rooms.
XXI. Normally,
a resident who violates the rules and regulations for the first time will
receive a warning e-mail from the Wardenˇ¦s Office. If a resident violates the
rules and regulations for the second and third times, 5 and 10 hostel admission
marks respectively will be deducted from his/her total score in the following
hostel application exercise. If a resident violates the rules and regulations
for more than three times, 15 hostel admission marks will be deducted from
his/her total score in the following hostel application for each time of
subsequent violation.*
XXII. A
resident may appeal to the Student Disciplinary Committee within 14 days on
receiving notice of disciplinary action. Students have the right to appeal
against the decisions of the Student Disciplinary Committee and appeal cases
will be handled in accordance with the rules, regulations and procedures
prevailing at the time.
* The Chairman of the SHMC has, in
consultation with the President, the Director of the Student Services Centre,
and the Wardens, taken Chairmanˇ¦s action to approve these rules and regulations
for the year 2005-06 with immediate effect. Further amendment is subject to the
SHMCˇ¦s approval.
