Lingnan Host Family Scheme (LHFS)

for Non-local degree-seeking undergraduate students (2008-2009)

To promote internationalization in Lingnan University, more and more non-local students are admitted to study in Lingnan. Support, advice and care are important for facilitating their stay during their studies in Lingnan. A Lingnan Host Family Scheme will be arranged so that a Lingnan staff member will take care of one to three non-local students (from Mainland and overseas) and give them a ˇ§homeˇ¨ feel while away from home.

1.   Aims and Objectives

a.          to render support to non-local students to facilitate their adaptation to live in Lingnan as well as in Hong Kong,

b.          to provide opportunities for local families to gain a deeper understanding of students coming from the mainland and overseas.

Through this Scheme, it is anticipated that non-local students will be able to build up a stronger sense of belonging, get a deeper understanding of the Hong Kong society, and achieve a better adaptation to life in Lingnan as well as in Hong Kong, thus facilitating cultural exchanges.

2.   Eligibility

Lingnan staff members who are interested to join.

3.   Roles of Host Family

a.          as a non-academic mentor/adviser

b.          to invite the non-local student(s) to join in some family functions/activities so that they will not feel lonely but feel ˇ§at homeˇ¨ as far as possible

c.          to accompany the student(s) in attending other social activities as deemed appropriate.

Remarks:

i)                It is not necessary for the students to live at the Host Familyˇ¦s home. Host families are, however, free to invite students to participate in family gatherings/ activities.

ii)              Frequency of gathering is up to the staff participating in the Lingnan Host Family Scheme to decide. It is recommended that the number of gatherings be kept at an appropriate level to student and staff, for instance one per term.

4.   Duration

        November 2008 to 31 May 2009.

5.        Matching of host family and students
