Objectives
The
Trilingual Debate Competition was suggested by the Chairman of the Council Dr
(Hon) LEUNG Chun Ying and President Edward K. Y. Chen. The Competition aims to
enhance students in the following aspects:
1.
Debating Skills
2.
Research Skills
3. Critical and logical thinking
4.
Language proficiency in Cantonese, English and Putonghua.
Competition Characteristics
1.
The
Northern Hostels Team
and the Southern Hostels Team
will compete for the
championship.
2. Four stage debaters and three floor questioners from each team will debate on the given topic using English and Chinese (Cantonese or Putonghua).

Note: Floor questions may be asked in English, Cantonese or Putonghua. However, each side will has to ask questions in different languages.
Regulations:
1. Representatives from
each team must come from MORE than one hostel.
2.
Both teams must use all
three languages (English, Cantonese and Putonghua) throughout the match.
3.
Each team member must
use English and, either Cantonese or Putonghua in the match.
4.
Floor questioners
should not request for replies from specific debaters. The answering team can
decide who will answer floor questions.
5.
All debaters may be
asked to go on stage to answer questions from the audience and share their
experience before the results are announced.
6. Debaters are invited to their seats while adjudicators comment on various aspects of the debates.

* Content (Max 30 points)
* Fluency of Languages (Max 35 points)
* Structure (Max 20 points)
* Stage Manner (Max 10 points)
(Max 100 points in total)
B. Team Score:
* Team Cooperation (Max 50 points)
* Floor Questions (Max 15 points per question)
* Floor Question Responses (Max 15 points per question)
* Accumulated scores from individual debaters (Max 400 points)
(Max 540 points in total)
C. Winnings:
1. Adjudicators will have
separate score sheets, and the winning team and best debater award will go to
the team supported in vote by the most adjudicators.
2. Each adjudicator
carries equal voting weight.
3. Votes of adjudicators
are awarded to the team and member that have been given the highest scores.
4. In the case of an equal
number of votes to more than one team or member, adjudicators may discuss and
come to consensus.
5. Adjudicators’ decisions
are final.
