Making Counselling Referrals

¡@

Professors, tutors, hostel and administrative staff interact with students very often. It is not uncommon to detect that students may be in need of counselling service pertaining to their academic study, family problem, interpersonal relationship, mental health, financial assistance, career & educational planning and other personal concerns.  As such, colleagues are welcome to refer the student to the Student Services Centre for counselling services.

How Can Counselling Help?

¡@

Counselling provides a non-threatening environment to assist students to explore themselves and to identify their core problems. With proper guidance, students will generate their own solutions to their problems, learn to make decisions & find ways to improve themselves.

Points to note before making referral

¡@

-      Early detection of students in need and making counselling referral will help students solve their own problems earlier and easier.

-      As counselling will be more effective on a voluntary basis, it is highly recommended that the staff member should  motivate the student to make a counselling appointment directly with the counsellor.

-      In case the student resists the counselling service, it would be crucial that both staff and counsellor work hand in hand to create an opportunity for the counsellor to make contact with the student. ¡@

What happens after making referrals

¡@

Upon receiving your referral, a counsellor would provide counselling to the student concerned. Should the student require assistance from other professionals such as the medical doctors, the counsellor would make outside referrals accordingly. The student will also be encouraged to keep you informed of his/her conditions as he/she feels comfortable.
