Tuition Fee

The tuition fee of summer course is as follows:

  • a three-credit course or an equivalent non-credit bearing additional language course: HK$5,000 per course
  • a one-credit course: HK$1,700 per course

For Lingnan University Full-time Undergraduate Students:

For students who are required to pay the summer course(s) tuition fee, they will receive email notification separately in due course, and they are required to settle the tuition fee by the deadline as stipulated in our notification, normally no later than Monday, 23 May 2016, i.e. one week before commencement of classes (except for final year students).

(a) Non-final year students (except for students who are on suspension of studies)

Non-final year students who wish to study in summer term are normally not required to pay the summer course(s) tuition fee. The credits (Note 5) of the summer courses taken will be considered as follows:

(i)

Non-final year students concerned will be considered as making use of their unused credits, if any, spared from the annual quota after Term 1 and Term 2 studies of the current academic year (Note 1 - 5) to enroll in summer course(s); or

  (ii)
If non-final year students concerned have no “unused credits” in the current academic year, they will be considered as making advanced use of credits out of the quota for the following academic year (Note 6), and their annual credit quota of the following academic year will be reduced accordingly.

Notwithstanding the above, in exceptional circumstances, for students admitted to 4-year curriculum in 2013-14 or after, if they choose to pay the tuition fee of the summer course(s) concerned and have obtained recommendation from their Programme Director/Head of Department and approval from the Dean concerned, their credits of summer course(s) taken (up to two courses) will not be counted in the maximum study load for the current academic year or in the next academic year. Students who opt to follow this arrangement should inform Registry in advance and provide relevant approval document.

(b) Final year students (except for students who are on suspension of studies)

For final year LU students who wish to study in summer term, the credits (Note 5) of the summer courses taken will be considered as follows:

  (i)
If the final year student concerned will fulfill graduation requirements after Term 2 of 2015-16, irrespective of having any unused credits in the final year of study, he/she shall pay the tuition fee as stipulated. Nevertheless, their 2016 summer term results will not be included as part of the degree study.

(ii) For final year students who have NOT yet fulfilled graduation requirements after Term 2 of 2015-16:

-
If they have sufficient “unused credits” spared from the annual quota after Term 1 and Term 2 studies of the current academic year (Note 1 - 5), students concerned will be considered as making use of their “unused credits” of the current academic year to enroll in summer courses, and they are not required to pay the tuition fee of summer course(s).

-
If they do not have any/sufficient “unused credits” (Note 1 - 5) in the current academic year, they shall pay the tuition fee as stipulated.

Final year students who are required to pay the tuition fee of summer course(s) will be notified by email individually after their Term 2 exam results are confirmed, starting from mid June 2016. The payment deadline is normally 1 week after the issuance of tuition fee notification. For details, please refer to the separate tuition fee payment email notification which will be sent to individual students in due course.

(c)
LU students who are on International or Mainland exchange programme but wish to enroll in Summer Term are required to provide their credits information based on their current study / approved study plan for deciding whether they are required to pay the tuition fee for Summer Term.

(d) For LU students on suspension but wish to enroll for summer courses -

  (i)
LU students who had suspended study in Term 1 and have already resumed study in Term 2 can make use of their unused credits of Term 2, if any, to enroll for summer courses . (Note 1 - 5)

  (ii)
However, LU students who are on suspension in Term 2 / both Terms 1 & 2 are required to pay for summer school. Students concerned are required to inform Registry in writing in advance to confirm their resumption of studies in Summer Term for necessary arrangements.

  (iii)
For students who have already applied for suspension of studies in any term in the following academic year, they are required to pay the tuition fee for summer courses.

Notes:

Unused credits:
1.
“Unused credits” refer to the maximum annual credit quota allowed for enrollment minus the actual enrolled credits in Terms 1 and 2 in the current academic year.

2.
In counting unused credits, only the regular annual quota of credits should be taken into account unless the student is in the final year of study (i.e. if a non-final year student has obtained special approval for enrolling additional credits beyond the quota for Terms 1 and 2 but subsequently abandoned the extra enrollment in Terms 1 and 2, those previous specially approved additional credits would NOT be counted as unused credits).

3.
For example, if a student under 3-year curriculum has enrolled a total of 30 credits in Terms 1 and 2 of 2014-15, he/she will have 3 unused credits (= max. annual credit quota allowed minus actual enrolled credits in Terms 1 & 2 = 33 - 30) for taking a summer course of 1-3 credits; By the same token, a first year student under 4-year curriculum who has enrolled a total of 27 credits in Terms 1 and 2 of 2014-15 will also have 3 unused credits (i.e. max. annual credit quota allowed minus actual enrolled credits in Terms 1 & 2 = 30 - 27) for taking a summer course of 1-3 credits.

4.
However, due to the different academic structure for students under 3-year and 4-year curriculum admitted in or after 2012, if a first year student under 4-year curriculum has obtained special approval from Programme Director/Head of Department concerned/Dean (for a student whose Major programme has not been allocated) to allow him/her to take extra credits in Summer Term to make up the number of credits of the course(s) failed in Term 1 or 2, these extra credits approved would be regarded as unused credits in the current academic year irrespective of the no. of actual enrolled credits in Terms 1 & 2 (note: these extra credits approved shall be limited to six and will NOT be counted in the maximum study load of the following year). Students who opt to follow this arrangement should inform Registry in advance and provide relevant approval document.

5.
For the calculation of the study load of non-credit bearing courses offered in Summer Term (e.g. additional language courses), each of these courses will be regarded as carrying a load of 3 credits in considering whether students concerned is making use of unused credits in the current academic year or making advanced use of credits of the following academic year, i.e. 3 credits will be deducted in study load, but no credit will be earned.

Advanced use of credits:
6.
A student who studies summer course(s) by making advanced use of credits of the following year but subsequently/actually does not study for 2 complete terms (Term 1 & Term 2) in that following year (such as suspension, early graduation after Term 1, part-time students, etc.) will render the “advanced use” invalid, and therefore would be required to pay back the summer term tuition fees to the University.
Additional Note:
For students who have been resolved by the University to have their studies discontinued after Term 2 of 2015-16, their summer term enrollment(s) and summer term assessment results (if any) will be removed accordingly.

For non-LU Undergraduate Students (including overseas & local applicants with equivalent qualifications):

  • The tuition fee is as follows:
    1. A three-credit course or an equivalent non-credit bearing additional language course (e.g. French / Japanese / Spanish): HK$5,000 per course
    2. A one-credit course: HK$1,700 per course

  • All applicants are required to pay a deposit of HK$500 upon submission of application for admission. Payment can be made by cheque or bank draft payable to "Lingnan University" (for non-local applicants, payment should be made by bank draft). The deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable except when the course concerned is cancelled or the applicant is not accepted for admission.

  • For non-local applicants, a non-refundable student visa/entry permit application fee of HK$160 is required by the Immigration Department of the Government of the HKSAR to process your visa/entry permit application. You are required to pay the student visa/entry permit application fee upon submission of the student visa/entry permit application. And upon notification of the Immigration Department that your student visa/entry permit application is approved and ready for collection, your student visa will be mailed to you by courier and you will be required to pay the courier fee upon our notification. The application fee for student visa/entry permit and the courier fee should be made by bank draft payable to "Lingnan University".
