
MPHIL AND PHD PROGRAMMES
Lingnan University aspires to be an internationally recognized liberal arts university with Hong Kong characteristics.
Applications are now invited for Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes commencing in September. Both MPhil and PhD programmes lead to in-depth study in specific research areas. The period of study of MPhil programmes is normally two years for full-time and three years for part-time students. The period of study for PhD programmes is normally three years for full-time and five years for part-time students with a relevant master's degree; and four years full-time or six years part-time for students without a relevant master's degree.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
An applicant for admission to candidate for the degree of MPhil should normally:
- hold a relevant bachelor's degree with first or second class honours or at an equivalent standard awarded by a tertiary education institution recognised for this purpose by the University; or
- have obtained an equivalent qualification; or
- have provided satisfactory evidence of academic and professional attainment.
An applicants for admission to candidature for the degree of PhD should normally:
- hold a master's degree awarded by a tertiary education institution recognised for this purpose by the University; or
- hold a relevant bachelor's degree with first or second class honours or at an equivalent standard, and have registered in a programme of study for a master's degree at a recognised tertiary education institution for at least one year and have evidence of research achievement; or
- have obtained an equivalent qualification of a) or b) above; or
- have provided satisfactory evidence of academic and professional attainment.
- Note : First degree graduates with proven research qualification or experience might be admitted direct to PhD studies only under exceptional circumstances. Normally a candidate without a master's degree would not be admitted to PhD studies and he/she should register as an MPhil student in the first instance.
Both MPhil and PhD programmes lead to in-depth study in specific research areas. The University recruits mainly full-time MPhil students. Successful applicants will normally be provided with a Postgraduate Studentship with a monthly stipend of HK$13,200*.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS FOR MPHIL / PHD
An applicant should possess:
- a relevant bachelor’s degree of second class honours or above or a master’s degree from a university in Hong Kong or an English speaking country; or
- a band score of 6.5 or above in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); or
- a score of 550 (paper-based test) or 213 (computer-based test) or 79 (internet-bases test) or above in a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
- grade C or above in the Cambridge Test of Proficiency in English Language; or
- grade C or above in English Language in the Overseas General Certificate of Education (GCE); or
- an equivalent qualification to prove his/her language proficiency which will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
An applicant who intends to write his/her thesis in Chinese may be exempted at the discretion of the admissions panel from fulfilling the above criteria.
An applicant may be required to demonstrate his/her ability in English and/or Chinese through means of an interview.
