LU kick-started collaborations with Rotary Club of Hong Kong for Social Betterment

In October 2021, the University has just kick-started a series of collaborations with the Rotary Club of Hong Kong in serving diverse generations among the community. As the first step, Vice President Professor Joshua Mok Ka-ho was invited to be the guest speaker in the Rotary Club’s lunch meeting and shared his thoughts on “Productive Engagement and Ageing in Productivist Welfare Regimes: Questing for an Age-friendly City in Hong Kong”, with leaders and professionals from across sector. Fellow Rotarians were impressed of the talk and conducted a meaningful discussion about how different stakeholders can make further steps to co-create a more age-friendly Hong Kong.

In addressing the issue of ageing population and rising awareness towards dementia, the University and the Rotary Club will enter into a tripartite collaboration with Tuen Mun Hospital for the “Smart Dementia Care” program. On 6 Oct 2021, Rotary Club has invited Ms Polly Kwong, the art tutor of Sir Charles Kuen Kao (高錕教授), for an online seminar to share with the Gerontech ambassadors of the LU Jockey Club Gerontechnology and Smart Ageing (GTSA) Project and the public about how art can be a means in alleviating dementia patients’ emotional distress. Moving forward, Ms. Polly and volunteers of the Rotary Club are going to conduct four art workshops at the LU Jockey Club Gerontech-X Lab in Nov 2021 for the Gerontech ambassadors as well as volunteers of Tuen Mun Hospital.

Apart from services for the senior citizens, the University is honored to be part of the annual Millennium Entrepreneurship Program (MEP) organized by the Rotary Club of Harmony and Prosperity Hong Kong and Wofoo Social Enterprises. The MEP 2021 is a cross-sectoral project between secondary schools, business sectors and NGOs, designed to prepare the young generation to be future entrepreneurs. Theme of the year will be “Post-Pandemic Innovation for Social Betterment”. Throughout the program, students will work in small groups under mentor guidance to propose feasible business proposals on innovative services or products on Smart Learning, Gerontechnology, Health and Fitness or Digital Transformation. The GTSA Project Team is glad to be invited to deliver training workshops and provide support to groups who are interested in the topic of Gerontechnology. Students participating in the MEP will further be invited to visit the LU Gerontech-X Lab to learn about the latest development of Gerontechnology in Hong Kong. Upon the final stage, finalists will conduct pitch presentations in April 2022 and Professor Mok will serve as one of the judges to provide comments and present prizes to the winning teams.
