“I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to study at Lingnan, and to gain so much exposure throughout my studies. In the past months, I have been involved in a start-up project aimed at empowering Hong Kong youth in terms of their employability upon graduation. With the knowledge acquired from my Social Sciences courses, our start-up hopes to prepare more graduates while taking the first steps out of school into the labour market.”

“I am graduating this year from Lingnan University not just with a degree but a ton of wonderful memories, skills, and hunger to dive deeper into the field. As a Social Science student majoring in Economics at Lingnan University I got exposed to a variety of disciplines not only within Economics but in Social Science in general. This broadened my horizon and equipped me to approach any topic in the field of Economics from a holistic perspective. Moreover, professors in the Faculty of Social Sciences have always been supportive and encouraged me to ask deeper and sharper questions regarding any given subject which enriched my learning experience at Lingnan and further fuelled my interest in the field of Economics. “

“As a student who is always concerned about the community and positive community development, the various activities at Lingnan University motivated me to pursue greater knowledge and gain more in-depth life experiences. A saying about the Lingnan University liberal art spirit goes: “Care for others, to be responsible for their own actions”. I applied this mindset in my investigation of urban farming in Hong Kong when I joined the Hong Kong Techathon in the area of smart cities. I learned a lot in this competition and our project was awarded fourth place out of fifteen."

MAJOR IN PSYCHOLOGY

“The compulsory two years of hostel education and residential Hall life, which is one of the many key features of the liberal arts education at Lingnan University have prepared me well to deal with diversity, change, and complexity. With the support of Lingnan University, I was given an opportunity to study a semester exchange at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. These experiences challenged my independence and taught me how to live with people from different cultural backgrounds. During my time at Lingnan University, I have learned and wholeheartedly experienced that knowledge does not only come from reading textbooks, but also through the opportunities to observe and get in touch with different people inside and outside of the Lingnan University campus.”

“The Social Sciences Programme at Lingnan University with its broad-based education has facilitated my all-round development. I enrolled in three courses that required me to engage in service learning. First, the Gaia School project required me to teach school students about scientific knowledge. Second, I took part in an internship for Yan Oi Tong Wu Chung District Elderly Community Center, which was my first ever work experience. Finally, the Jockey Club Project inspired me that new technology can be used to make Hong Kong elders get more familiar with youngsters and help to create a more age-friendly city. All of these activities were not only great fun, but I treasure them as an important part of my time as a Lingnan University student.”

"Looking back over my four-year undergraduate studies at Lingnan, the BSS programme to me was a starting place where I could gain exposure to different fields in the Social Sciences, and most importantly, has cultivated my interest in psychology later on. I particularly enjoyed the time when I majored in psychology. The Department of Applied Psychology provides courses that cover a wide range of psychology disciplines. Besides, the Professors and the teaching staff always provide a friendly and supportive learning environment to students. After graduation, I furthered my studies at Lingnan and pursued an MPhil degree in psychology. My thesis supervisor gave me a lot of flexibility and guidance on shaping my thesis topic, and also provided me an opportunity to collaborate with clinicians from Tuen Mun hospital. During my MPhil studies, I could get involved in different duties including scenario design, subject recruitment, carrying out simulation and data analysis etc. These valuable experiences have equipped me with solid research skills for my future career path."

“The liberal arts education at Lingnan offered me a supportive environment to grow as a person while furthering my knowledge and ability. The freedom to choose courses from multi-disciplines and passionate and distinguished professors made my university life fruitful. I was able to look at various social issues rigorously under the real-world context, such as social welfare, ageing and public health. In class, we were always encouraged to have stimulating discussions. Exchanging ideas with my professors and peers helped stretch my mind and strengthen my analytical thinking.

While providing core academic experience, the Faculty of Social Sciences is also committed to equipping students with practical skills and a global perspective. My opportunities to participate in the international exchange programme to the United Kingdom and internships in leading companies in Hong Kong were rewarding and eye-opening. They helped me learn from people with diverse backgrounds and greatly enhanced my ability to embrace the challenges and opportunities of an ever-changing world. I am very thankful to Lingnan for paving the way to my career in the public service.”
