Programme Overview
The Concentration in Heritage Tourism and Management of Master of Arts in Arts and Cultural Heritage Management is a progressive study programme focusing on the innovative solution to the heritage tourism sector now and in the changing future. It provides a pathway for students who would prefer to gain more in depth knowledge of heritage tourism and management in the Hong Kong context. Students who opt for this HTM concentration are required to complete all the required courses and will be awarded a single award from Lingnan University.
The Government of Hong Kong SAR has set aside resources to promote arts and culture and to develop green tourism. With the ongoing popularity of Palace Museum and M+ and the future developments of the West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong’s role as an East meets West centre for international arts and cultural exchange will continue to be promoted and strengthened. As specified in the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area and the Culture and Tourism Development Plan for the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area (the CTD Plan), the promotion of cultural heritage and green tourism projects with Hong Kong characteristics, enhancing tourism promotion, and rolling out enticing promotional offers in a timely manner to attract tourists from outside Hong Kong can help consolidate Hong Kong’s position as a core demonstration zone for multi-destination tourism and an international tourism hub.
As a result, there is a need to prepare students with the knowledge of heritage management, tourism, and skills to tackle problems and challenges related to heritage tourism and management, along with design or research methodology to provide innovative solutions. This will be achieved by introducing the Concentration with an interdisciplinary approach, where by the specialities of the School of Graduate Studies, Department of History, Office of Service Learning, and Science Unit collaborate in offering a unique master’s programme with an aim to enhance the heritage tourism sector in terms of visibility and ecological sustainability.
Key Features
- An innovative curriculum: As with the Master of Arts in Arts and Cultural Heritage Management, courses are designed to combine research with practice in heritage tourism and management, to train highly skilled professionals and critical intellectuals for the heritage tourism sector in Hong Kong.
- Blended learning methods: High-quality teaching through a variety of mechanisms, including lectures, seminars, workshops, and group research projects with significant levels of individual tutorial support, particularly for the capstone project.
- An interdisciplinary approach: Courses are constructed to draw insights from different disciplines, including History, Science, Tourism, Management, and Entrepreneurship.
- Inclusion of diverse stakeholders: As engaging in real-world issues and enhancing the heritage tourism sector requires the inclusion of all stakeholders’ viewpoints, such that academics, policymakers, practitioners, entrepreneurs and NGOs will be invited to contribute to the curriculum and participate in the courses.
- Sustainable and inclusive solutions: Courses are provided to introduce innovative solutions to heritage tourism and management with an understanding of critical issues faced in the heritage tourism sector now and in the changing future.
Careers and Skills
The Concentration will produce a new crop of talents with in depth knowledge and skills to take up current and future opportunities emerging from the heritage tourism sector in Hong Kong. It will broaden students ’academic and experiential horizons on heritage tourism and management issues.
