A Festival of English Drama and Poetry |
|||||||||||||||
Description The English Department will present a Festival of poetry and drama performance and recitation given by English literature students under the direction of Prof Mike Ingham and drama coach Mr Sui Loon Leung. The pieces will include Lorraine Hansberry's famous drama about domestic and racial issues in the United States, "A Raisin in the Sun" and also several poems by Langston Hughes on themes of emancipation, freedom, civil rights and equal opportunities. Similar themes on gender equality will be featured in extracts from Caryl Churchill's play, "Top Girls" as well as poems and a scene from Alan Bennett's award-winning play "The History Boys". These performances will focus on the topic of education and also war, and reflect on the purposes and priorities in education and in society, and how these external things relate to our inner lives and what we want from our lives.
