Wong Bing Lai Music and Performing Arts Unit
黃炳禮音樂及演藝部

The Wong Bing Lai Music and Performing Arts Unit serves the entire university community by providing performances, activities, and courses to enrich the education and enjoyment of all.

The Unit offers Core Curriculum and advanced courses in a wide variety of music and performing arts-related topics. It encourages both a hands-on and an intellectual understanding of the performing arts and its meanings and contexts. The Unit also supports and coordinates course offerings by different departments in the Faculty of Arts, highlighting the connection of disciplines such as Cultural Studies, English, and Chinese to the art of performance.

The Unit provides opportunities to students to actively participate in the performing arts. It presents performance events throughout the academic year on campus, including concerts featuring music from various cultures, and drama and dance performances. These events constitute the series "Performances@Lingan", and are open to public, thereby enriching cultural life in the Western New Territories. To encourage interactive and experiential learning for students, the Unit organizes workshops, music lessons and ensembles for students. The Unit also manages student ticketing for off-campus performances, to facilitate lifelong learning and community involvement.

As a liberal arts institution, Lingnan can provide a unique artistic education. With an interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary approach to the performing arts, we can cultivate students’ creative thinking and their ability to understand the connections between different art forms and between arts and society. We can nurture leaders who will be versed in the meanings of arts and culture, understand the performing arts industry, and can contribute artistic meaning to their communities. This holistic approach makes Lingnan distinct in Hong Kong, and engages the best practices in arts education of the top liberal arts institutions in Asia and the world.

About the Donors

Our Unit is generously supported by Dr. Abraham Wong Tat Chang, Mr David Wong Tat Kee and Mr Samuel Wong Tat Sum, the sons of the late Dr. Wong Bing Lai. They are all successful entrepreneurs who have been actively involved in the building construction industry and in property investment, development and management. At the same time, they inherit the legacy of their father, Dr. Wong Bing Lai, of contributing to the local community and education development. The Wong family has been a staunch supporter of Lingnan University. They have made significant donations to the Lingnan University Development Fund and have sponsored scholarships to local and mainland educational institutions.
