Living Learning Community

Hostel experience prepares a better transition for young adults to emerge from protected teenagers. Students will learn independence, interpersonal skills, sense of community and responsibility through living with roommate(s), floor mates and community life in hostels. Hostel is a place where students find unity, friendship and generosity. Everyone in the community contributes to the common good, to take responsibility and to console and support one another in difficulties;

The intellectual development and horizons of students will be enhanced through a co-curriculum of residential hall education activities and immense interactions with other hostel residents, Warden’s Office and fellows who come from different study disciplines, and through structured hostel education programmes;

Students’ language skills, appreciation of different cultures and global perspectives will be enhanced through social interactions with hostel residents from all over the world; and

Students will also learn leadership and self-governance through participation in floor committees and Student Hostel Associations.

The Student Hostel Management Committee approved on 10 March 2011 that student hostels will become a Living Learning Community (LLC) by advocating a clear educational theme. Wardens’ Offices will propose a theme and a year plan of programmes bearing ILP units under hostel education domain for endorsement of Student Hostel Management Committee.

There will be two main types of programmes offered by LLCs, i.e. (1) common themes about hostel life such as significance of hostel life for students’ whole person development; challenges of hostel life; and leadership and self-governance; (2) specific theme of the year such as green living, healthy life and civic responsibilities. The first type of programmes aims to enhance students’ understanding towards hostel life and its educational meaning. The second type of programmes aims to enhance students’ intellectual development and horizons, and encourage immense interactions with hostel residents, Wardens’ Offices and fellows who come from different study disciplines. Programmes organized by specific LLC may also open to residents of the other hostels to join.
