Public Talk: Untangling Squid Game

The popular Netflix series Squid Game has received global attention, but we still want to know more about the show! Despite its obvious messages about the cruelty of capitalism (in the story of contestants in a deadly competition), Squid Game raises critical questions that have yet to be answered, waiting to be unfolded. This public talk invites a Hong Kong-based South Korean scholar Yoon Soo Ryon to “untangle” the problems raised by the show. Prof. Yoon will introduce us to the sociocultural context of South Korea including its economic crisis, feminist activism, and political mobilization, which shapes Squid Game’s key narrative. Our understanding of Squid Game will be enriched by Prof. Yoon’s discussion of the critiques in South Korea, where the show’s rising popularity has prompted controversies and critical debates. The talk, designed to be more engaging, is composed of a mini-lecture, dialogue with students, and an open-floor Q&A section with the audience. It will be also held in a hybrid model (attendance and live streaming). Registration is required.

Speaker:       Prof. Yoon Soo Ryon (Department of Cultural Studies, Lingnan University)

Moderator:  Prof. Leung Shi-chi Daren (Department of Cultural Studies, Lingnan University)

Sound as Music as Culture
Music has long been a topic of interest for scholars in various disciplines.
Their approaches however couldn’t be more different from what the founding father of historical musicology Guildo Adler had envisioned at the end of the nineteenth century.
Initially focusing on style and structure of European classical music, the study of music has come a long way and now includes a range of approaches and perspectives.
This talk focuses on recent developments in the study of music and its implication in and contribution to the study of people, culture, and society.

Guest speakers: YU Siu Wah (Adjunct Professor, The Chinese University of Hong Kong; Department of Cultural Studies, Lingnan University) and LI Siu Leung (Adjunct Professor, Department of Cultural Studies, Lingnan University)

1530 – 1700 I Friday 30 April 2021 (Hong Kong Time)
Registration deadline : 25 April 2021. You will receive the zoom link two days before the event.
Register in advance here.

The last hundred years of history of Cantonese opera in Hong Kong has been a story of syncretism in its interaction with modern social reality (that by definition, like it or not, for better or worse, means “already westernized”): from adapting European musical instruments, modern stories, and Euro-American movies in the early decades of the twentieth century, to European operatic aria style and digital stage technology a hundred years after. It is not that Cantonese opera was ahead of the other regional Chinese operatic forms in responding to the West, or pioneered in many “new” attempts. It is just that anything that goes, Cantonese opera practitioners take, for survival. In this talk we shall interrogate how Hong Kong Cantonese opera, in negotiating the ineluctable encroachment of (Euro)modernity that threatens traditional intangible cultural heritage of all kinds, has imagined its “modernity” in its creativity and production as a tactic of sustainability in modern society. We shall discuss musical and theatrical aspects of Hong Kong Cantonese opera’s “modern imaginations” in practice, and examine the efficacy of the many imaginative practices that would be effective, empowering, incomplete, futile, or failed.

Urban Development changes nature and ecology. Animals living spaces are then forced to hide behind city, and their “accidental appearances” in the city are always said to be a kind of “intrusion” into human living. However, to the contrary, it is human dominating the nature and being the intruders to animals’ life with modern urban development.

The talk is about how “community animals” survive in the name of the contradiction of human attitude and policy concern. And there are in fact possibilities of having a communal living between human and animals with a revising idea of ecology especially in the dominating logic of urban development.

Chan Ka-ming’s Bio
Chan Ka-Ming is a university lecturer in cultural studies, originally teaching and researching in the field of cinema and popular culture.

The Great Regression? Contemporary Europe from a Historical Perspective I & II
Speaker: Prof. Ozan Zeybek

Dates: Oct 11 (Wed) and Oct 18 (Wed) 2017
Venue: LKK103, Lingnan University
Time: 7:00pm-10:00pm

In recent years, we have increasingly witnessed the rise of "authoritarian or reactionary populism" in different parts of the world, as signified in the events and trends such as Brexit, immigration crisis and "democratic fatigue" in Europe, as well as the ascent to power of the following political leaders: Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Narendra Damodardas Modi, and Rodrigo Duterte etc. Does that mean "the great regression" is coming near, and the contemporary global context is somewhat comparable to the historical circumstances in the early 20th century? How can we understand the current situation in Europe in view of the current political changes? Would something like Fascism reoccur in contemporary Europe? These two lectures will address the above questions from an ecological perspective, focusing on the limits of welfare states, democracies and the financial system. The lectures will try to link climate change, soaring debts, unfulfilled promises of democracy with the rise of authoritarianism.

Biography of the speaker:
Sezai Ozan Zeybek is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Bilgi University, Istanbul. As a geographer, he studies "trivial" places, "insignificant" people and "dead" times. He follows up the stories of stray dogs, babies, or men who kill time in coffee shops day after day. All along, he scrutinizes space-time conceptions of, mainly, capitalism. Recently, he has started to work on issues around ecology with a focus on industrial meat production. Additionally, he is interested in formations of militarism and different constructions of manhood. He has a blog in Turkish where he posts non-academic, seemingly "out-of-agenda" articles: http://ozanoyunbozan.blogspot.com/

The 4th Hong Kong Touch Art Festival Exhibition
Date : from 17 to 26 Feb 2017
Venue : L1 & L0 Galleries, Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC), 30 Pak Tin Street, Shek Kip Mei, Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Touch Art Festival Exhibition has been launched for three years and got an encouraging feedback from both artists and the public. In 2017, the 4th Hong Kong Touch Art Festival <Master of Cultural Studies (MCS) Programme, Lingnan University is one of the event sponsors> will be held from 17th to 26th February, at the L1 & L0 Galleries of Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre (JCCAC). The theme of the festival is "Mind's Eye", which aims to explore the ability of how human can experience imaginary. Exhibitions and workshops on touch-sensitive art works, creative works from both sighted and visually challenged artists will be open to the public.

The aesthetics of touch art emphasizes the sensory communication (non-visual) created through the process of touching the objects. It can be perceived through the shape and texture of the work, not its color, lines, composition and the space. Through touching the art, its texture, material, temperature, combining with the shape of the work, smell and sound (if any) would produce unlimited imagination. It is a form of art in which the visually challenged can participate, and we strongly encourage audiences to use all senses more than just the sight to explore and understand art.

地點: 嶺南大學LKK102(梁銶鋸樓)

Talk on “The Year of ’93 (China’s Crises and Opportunities)” by Prof Wen Tiejun

“China’s problem is that it has a dream, a dream of modernisation,” said Prof Wen Tiejun in his lecture on “The Year of ’93 (China’s Crises and Opportunities)” at Lingnan University on 24 January.

Prof Wen observed that the year of 1993 saw great deficits in government revenue, foreign trade and money supply, posing a major crisis for China that was comparable to the Great Depression in the US and Western Europe. China responded with depreciation of the Renminbi by 51% in real terms, re-allocation of local tax returns between the municipal and central governments from 73%:27% to 50%:50%, and monetisation of Renminbi through investments in infrastructure. These were named “deepened reforms” in the Chinese context.

Prof Wen examined the underlying causes of China’s 1993 crisis, which can be dated back to the opening-up reforms in 1978. The reforms were essentially a response to the economic problems of China after decades of closed-door policy and international sanctions.

In his lecture, the title of which conjures up French writer Victor Hugo’s last novel about the anti-revolutionary revolts of 1793, Prof Wen also compared the socio-economic conditions of France before the outbreak of the French Revolution to the current situation of China. He said Louis XVI’s attempt to negotiate with the rising bourgeoisie at the dawn of the Revolution might be comparable to the ongoing power gaming between the government sector and the fast-growing middle-class in China. What seems worrisome is that, according to Prof Wen, both parties do not seem to know where the true crisis lies and have been paying little attention to the livelihood of the grassroots. However, the poverty-stricken, loosely organised peasants were those who ignited the flames of revolution with their attack on the Bastille. The occurrence of more than 100,000 “mass public security incidents” in China annually also tells something of the Chinese grassroots’ response to the power game, Prof Wen added.

From a historical perspective, Prof Wen concluded that the price of modernisation is too high. He questioned whether China could afford paying such a price. “The problem of China is that it has a dream, a dream of modernisation that very few people bother to question,” he added.

Born in 1951, Prof Wen is a renowned expert on socio-economic development and rural issues advising various Chinese ministries and departments on the economy and the environment. He now serves as Executive Dean of the Institute of Advanced Studies for Sustainability, Director of Rural Reconstruction and Director of Institute for Rural Economy and Finance, Renmin University of China.
