Carman LAU Ka Man
Year of Application: 2021
Internship Institution: M+ Rover
I was honored to learn that I was selected as the recipient of a Chamber of Young Snow Curatorial Scholarship 2020-21, which supported me through a 6-month curatorial practice at M+ Rover in 2021.
The experience at M+ Rover gave me deeper understanding of curatorship through in-depth research of subjects, organizing showcases for the art works, innovative problem-solving, and effective delivery of important concepts to the visitors. I deeply appreciate the opportunity to work with such an amazing team to learn the spirit and attitude from all the stakeholders.
Meanwhile, I can provide a wonderful output for the general public, a place for knowledge sharing which enlightens the visitors to see things, although not limited to art. Our exhibition theme, Yes but Why? （拾萬個為甚麼）offered visitors an alternative space to take on new perspectives, express their thoughts, and ask questions. We offered no fixed answers; rather, many potential answers could be created by hands-on audience engagement with their own work. We also traveled to different sites, like the Affordable Art Fair and West Kowloon Art Park, to put on showcases and attend workshops. I remember one visitor asked, "why is your exhibition so different from other art spaces?", which resonates with our theme "Yes but why". While working in this programme, I recognized that the value of art lies in its potential to open up possibilities for creative interventions, thinking, and expression.
