The Visual Studies programme at Lingnan is definitely one of a kind. Besides enjoying the rich courses provided, I had close connections with all the faculty members, who are incredibly helpful as both professors and mentors of my life.

Being a Visual Studies student was the best decision I have ever made. It helped me build a global perspective of art as the art history courses focus on both Chinese and Western art, and its cinema courses encompass films of East Asia, Europe, America, and Africa. Through the student exchange programme dedicated to Visual Studies students, I had the opportunity to study at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, which enriched my understanding of European, especially Scandinavian arts. My study at the Visual Studies programme helped me break stereotypes and broaden my definition of art.

The studio practice courses offered me a chance to step into the shoes of artists and experience how an initial idea was transformed into an artwork. Through the philosophy of aesthetics courses, I further realized that art is not only about how artists express their ideas, but more importantly, it is about how audiences perceive them. Therefore, I developed an interest to become a curator and pursue my career in arts institutions. In the Department, I joined the Art Wall Committee to undertake the curatorial role. Through internships provided by the programme, I gained hands-on experiences at local art organizations and fairs, such as Oi! Street Art Space and Art Basel Hong Kong. To further research the topic of art, cultural institutions, and audience perceptions, I undertook final year research project about the history of videogame museums and exhibitions worldwide. Under the insightful guidance of my supervisor, not only did I acquire valuable research experiences, but also, I discovered various challenges faced by art institutions today, which inspired me to pursue my current study at the Master programme of Visual Art Administration at New York University.

The Visual Studies program at Lingnan is definitely one of a kind. Besides enjoying the rich courses provided, I had close connections with all the faculty members, who are incredibly helpful as both professors and mentors of my life. When I introduce my bachelor’s degree to my cohort during my graduate studies, I always receive compliments and admirations. I will always be proud of being a Visual Studies student.
