Studying in the MACAH programme provides me with the opportunity to rethink my work in the art world. The diverse teaching topics give students the opportunity to be exposed to different aspects of working in the art industry, understand that curating is not just about exhibition, but consists of a series of activities and management. Lecturers gave us a lot of freedom to express our ideas in class and encouraged us to explore different topics based on our interests. The internship programme provided me with practical experience working in a museum. I learned from work to think about problems and solutions from diverse perspectives, which gave me a clearer understanding of future development directions. During the writing process of the dissertation, my tutor’s guidance led me to find a good research direction, structure all the research content and ideas, and integrate them into meaningful research. The MACAH programme provides me with confidence to work no matter in groups or individually, and undertake higher-level study on art history.

Studying at the MA in Art History and Curating (MACAH) programme has been a truly fulfilling experience for me. With a great variety of elective courses, I have focused my educational journey on broadening the knowledge of Western art history and developing curatorial competence. The learning process has helped me to form a crucial skill — conducting comprehensive analysis of artworks and art collections in terms of the subject matters, techniques, and historical contexts. As for the practical side of the programme, an internship at Tai Kwun Contemporary has given me an opportunity to assist the organisation of different art projects and observe how they are presented to audiences. Moreover, it has been valuable to research the art scene of Hong Kong, while also learning about the local history. Working on the Curatorial Project, my teammates and I have been collaborating with local artists, and have been able to get a deeper understanding of their practices, as well as of the intricate combination of creativity and organisational skills necessary for arranging art exhibitions. MACAH Exit Scholarship is an amazing opportunity for me to enhance the exploration of contemporary art scene in Hong Kong, and concentrate on expanding the skill set essential for organising engaging exhibitions and joining art organisations dedicated to supporting artists and developing the art field.

The programme has strengthened my understanding of contemporary art history and curatorial practices, with diverse and in-depth courses, as well as masterclasses, site-visits and practicums. It was interesting and eye-opening to learn about critical perspectives of art histories as well as curatorial trends and approaches. I am also very impressed by the Hong Kong art history course, which brought me into deeper understanding of the rich local cultural and arts histories. The capstone project was a great opportunity for us to employ learnt knowledge and skills in a real-life environment. Thank you very much to our lecturers as well as fellow classmates in the learning journey. I believe the experience will be beneficial in my future career as both an artist and curator.

This year in Hong Kong, I have met so many wonderful people, such as my teachers, my classmates from Lingnan University, etc. They have a vitality and energy that have inspired me to think deeper and made me an enthusiastic learner of Chinese art history. This is also impossible without the rich resources of the Lingnan Library and the interesting curriculum design of MACAH Program, I have been able to continuously absorb knowledge and make progress. I am so honored to receive this scholarship before my graduation. A million thanks to Lingnan University! I will carry on my study and research in Chinese art and keep learning all the time.

The study year in MACAH has felt like being lifted up, allowing me to see the broad art world. Various art-related theories and perspectives have made me aware of the complex layers of meaning and significance that an artwork can bear. As a result, I am more confident in interpreting art from my own preferred perspective. Moreover, I now have a better understanding of the relationship between art and society as a whole, including culture, social power structures, the market, and more. This enables me to have insight into the role I can play in society by pursuing a career in the art-related field. The study experience became even more amazing when it unexpectedly ended with an exit scholarship. This undoubtedly transformed the once challenging time into something worthwhile and has given me the confidence to face even greater challenges in my future career pathways. I greatly appreciate the entire experience offered by MACAH programme.

Finally, I felt that the programme office and the university are a heartfelt and responsible education system, with teachers who really care about teaching and learning, and a commitment to continually improving students' study experiences, which shifted my previous stereotypes of education authority while also offering me with a really enjoyable year on campus.

Learning in the MACAH programme was a fruitful experience. The programme gives students a better understanding of the duties of a curator and its position in the art world. Studying under this focus was quite different from my previous studies in art history only. Viewing artworks from the perspective of a curator led me to pay attention to some issues that I previously did not notice before, namely provenance and related management policies in art institutions. The lecturers were helpful and did not hesitate to share their insights gained from actual working experience. Students can also receive hands-on experience in exhibition design and planning by choosing curatorial projects as their capstone project. This final project was a good chance for me to reflect on my studies, applying my knowledge into practice, and learn how to work as part of a curatorial team. After completing this programme, I can now appreciate unique artworks not only for their aesthetics and history but also for the values built up by people who have handled them throughout the years.

My study in the MACAH programme enabled me to break stereotypes and broaden my understanding of art. The diverse courses offer me with professional skills in both curating and art history. I completed a dissertation on Chinese women artists in Qing under the compassionate guidance and supervision of Dr Michelle Huang. My critical thinking, research, and writing skills have improved my capacity to work at the gallery. I had the opportunity to work as an intern at the CUHK Art Museum last summer, the experience provided me more hands-on experience in museum operations. Thanks to the Graduate Scholarship, I now have more opportunities to get vast knowledge in the art field. My time with the MACAH programme has truly broadened my horizon and deepened my understanding of the art world.
