We are facing drastic changes in the world. Global economy has been experiencing up and down for a long time and will continue to be so in the future. Globalization is the champion during some periods of time whereas dis-globalization prevails during other periods. After 40-year economic reform and opening-up, China has improved its people’s living standard a lot. It was one of the poorest countries in the world in the 1970s, but it has become the second largest economy in the world and moved up to be a middle-income country. Hong Kong is one of the four dragons and has achieved great economic success since 1970s. It is one of the world financial center.

It is the mission of the Department of Economics of Lingnan University to equip our students with the knowledge to learn, analyze, and change the world. We are located in Hong Kong; and we must serve the local society. We are in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and China; and we must expand our horizon beyond Hong Kong and participate in the economic development of the GBA and China. We live and work in the internationally-connected city; and we must have the global perspectives.

Lingnan University in general and the Department of Economics in particular provide students with an excellent study and living environment. Students will benefit from the liberal arts study at the Department and the University. The faculty members of the Department are dedicated to research, teaching, and community services. Their research expertise covers the whole spectrum of economics. Some faculty members are internationally leading scholars in their fields.

The Department tries its best to provide an excellent research environment to its members and a super study experience to its students. We help our students to prepare for and start their nice career and new life.

Best wishes!

Head and Sydney SW Leong Chair Professor of Economics
