Topic Defence Seminar on "Study of the Green Paradox in Environmental and Resource Economics: Theories and Policies"

​It is generally accepted that the carbon taxes, subsidies and impovement in renewable enegy technologies are aimed at reducing the level of emissions of CO2 and improving the welfare. However, the imposition of such policies might aggravate rather than alleviate climate change. This possibility is called the Green Paradox. My study aims to fill in the gap in the existing literature, which not pay much attention in understanding whether the Green Paradox is more prominent under different market structures: perfect competition, monopoly and oligopoly. The rationale behind this is that the different types of market structures are affecting the strategic interaction among firms and hence the extraction rates of non-renewable sources of energy differently. And the question is whether the assumption also holds when climate change policies and technology improvement is taken into account. Multi-country setting and empirical testing also will be considered.
