John teaches part time at the Economics Department.  He retired from the Law School at City University of Hong Kong where he had taught for more than twenty years and been associate dean.  Prior to returning to Hong Kong, he taught economics at the University of Delaware and California State University at Los Angeles.  An interest in law led him to get a law degree at UC Davis.  He practised law for four years in California before he was recruited to teach law at CityU.
He teaches regulation and compliance of the financial markets, law and economics, and cluster courses on the economics of culture and happiness.

He has held many public appointments, including member of the Bilingual Laws Advisory Committee; member of Sub-committee on Civil Liability for Unsafe Products, the Law Reform Commission of Hong Kong; vice-chairman of the Consumer Council; chairman of the Board of Administrators of the Consumer Legal Action Fund; member of the Telecommunications (Competition Provisions) Appeal Board; member of the Humanities, Social Sciences and Business Studies Panel, the Research Grants Council; and CPD Accreditation Subcommittee, the Law Society of Hong Kong.

In addition to teaching, he enjoys practising Taichi.
