  • Biography

    Yunte Huang received his BA in English from Peking University and Ph.D. in English from the Poetics Program at State University of New York at Buffalo. He taught as an assistant professor of English at Harvard University from 1999 to 2003, before joining the faculty at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he was promoted to full professor of English in 2006. A Guggenheim Fellow, Huang is the author of many books, including Transpacific Displacement (Univ. of California Press, 2003), Transpacific Imaginations (Harvard Univ. Press, 2008), and Charlie Chan (Norton, 2010), which won the Edgar Award and was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. His most recent book, Inseparable: The Original Siamese Twins and Their Rendezvous with American History (Liveright, 2018), was also a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and named one of the Best Books of the Year in 2018 by the New York Times, Newsweek, San Francisco Chronicle, and National Public Radio. Huang is also the editor of The Big Red Book of Modern Chinese Literature (Norton, 2016), the translator into Chinese of Ezra Pound's Cantos, and the translator into English of the poetry of Yu Xinqiao, Che Qianzi, and others. He has published articles in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Daily Beast, PMLA, Yale Review, and many others. As a bestselling author, he has been featured on the National Public Radio (Fresh Air, Morning Edition, On Point), C-SPAN TV, BBC, Australian National Radio, Irish National Radio, and many others.
