Game Theory Finding Practical Answers For The Business World

Lingu UG Image ALT
As someone who somehow managed to score zero in a maths exam as a 12-year-old in middle school, Professor Leng Ming-ming has certainly come a long way.

Now Chair Professor of Computing and Decision Sciences at Lingnan University, he views that early setback as a definite turning point. It actually inspired a fascination for the subject, which ultimately led to a distinguished career in academia and notable research on game theory, operations and supply chain management, and the interface between operations and other disciplines.

“Taking my father’s advice, I began to read the textbook by myself before classes and, surprisingly, found that I could understand everything very easily,” he says. “I quickly developed a very strong interest and, since that time, have been addicted to mathematical problems and logical thinking. Even now, the best way for me to relax at weekends is by solving one or two problems from past Maths Olympiads.”

Clear proof of this new passion was evident when he took China’s National College Entrance Examination in the late 1980s. Completing the paper in less than half the allotted two hours, Leng also achieved full marks, setting him on the road to a subsequent PhD in management sciences at Canada’s McMaster University, where from 2001 he focused on dynamic programming, stochastic processes and, in particular, game theory and its applications.

“Game theory contributes to the analysis of situations involving conflict and cooperation, with two or more decision makers,” says Leng, who is also Dean of the Faculty of Business. “Since the early 1940s, it has been widely applied to many areas including business studies. And, in the 21st century, game-theoretic analysis of supply chain management became one of the hottest research issues, mainly because any supply chain consists of two or more firms at different echelons.”

The overall subject came to much wider attention thanks to the Oscar-recognised film A Beautiful Mind about Nobel prize-winning game theory scientist Professor John Nash. The book which inspired the film was on Leng’s PhD reading list and, in due course, caused him to look more closely at computational approaches for solution concepts in cooperative game theory.

“The rapid development of digital technology and social media has also brought about many changes in organisational and operational models,” he says. “Relationship management has become a key to supply chain success, so we need to understand how firms interact in an efficient manner to achieve win-win outcomes. Game theory has been a primary methodology in this analysis and has led to a significant number of managerial insights to help improve operations.”

Since becoming a full-time Lingnan faculty member in 2005, Leng has developed and taught business courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The themes encompass project management, simulation, e-business models and start-ups, drawing on his five-year experience of working in industry in Beijing before his PhD, as well his widely acknowledged areas of specialisation.

In parallel, his research has consistently sought answers to practical problems. More recently, it has centred on ways to entice firms to cooperate in a fair manner. One example, originally motivated by reference to what Wal-Mart does, was to see how to incentivise the use of blockchain technology in an entire food supply chain. Another was to explore how, using cooperative game theory, two or more firms could share the high cost of 5G infrastructure as fairly as possible.

Where feasible, Leng prefers to collaborate on projects and papers, believing that teamwork, which brings together diverse expertise and complementary skills, ensures higher-quality research.

“Honestly speaking, most of my projects are challenging; there is no ‘free lunch’ in the field of academia,” he says, noting too the importance of keeping a close eye on the international business news to spot evolving trends and potential case studies. “For each paper, there are a number of revisions and reviews, and the cycle time from initial submission to a journal to final acceptance averages 1.5 years.”

Indeed, he still remembers how the referee for one publication in IIE Transactions back in 2013 asked for complicated computations from limited data and the consideration of many decision variables and constraints.

“We tried to develop some helpful algorithms, which finally made our computations feasible. It was a very tough experience, but also of great help to my future research activities.”

Looking ahead, he wants any upcoming projects to contribute in some way to improving people’s daily life or industry operations.

“I may also consider some knowledge transfer (KT) projects that are not academic issues, but allow academic knowledge to be applied to real-world problems, usually with financial support from firms and practitioners.”

Elite student-athlete Ng Chi-hang pursues his dream at LU

Lingu UG Image ALT

In 2022/23, an outstanding athlete is admitted to the Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) programme, through the Direct Entry Stream for Top Athletes, and, as an individual elite athlete at the Hong Kong Sports Institute, he is an elite boccia player NG Chi-hang (BBA).

In recent years, Hong Kong has been blessed with a wealth of athletic talent, and Siobhan Bernadette Haughey, Edgar Cheung Ka Long, Marco Fu Ka Chun and Sarah Lee Wai Sze are already household names. And there are many more athletes in Hong Kong – full-time, part-time, able-bodied and disabled – who embrace the same Lion Rock spirit, and strive for excellence through hard work and perseverance.

Ng Chi-hang, who joined the Lingnan family this academic year, is an elite boccia player who has competed in numerous local events, and represented Hong Kong in the Asian Para Games in 2014 and the 10th National Para Games and 7th Special Olympics in 2019. "For me, taking part in the Asian Games in 2014 was an unforgettable experience. It was my first time playing a major competition and I had to compete against adults," he said.

Chi-hang started professional training when he was 15 years old, just one year before competing in the 2014 Asian Games. “At my special school, our teachers let us try to play different disability sports. At that time, I had never thought about joining the Hong Kong team or becoming a professional athlete, but I always loved boccia. In 2013, some coaches came to the school to select athletes, and I was chosen to participate in the youth games. That was when I started to train for boccia.” He was thinking about training for fun when he agreed, and “did not expect that it would be so professional” or that he would be so resolute.

Chi-hang was admitted to Lingnan’s Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) programme through the Direct Entry Stream for Top Athletes, and, as an individual elite athlete at the Hong Kong Sports Institute, he is required to attend at least 15 hours of training per week. Since he joined Lingnan, Chi-hang usually practises from 6 to 9 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, as well as all day Saturday and all day on alternate Sundays. "I felt quite tired initially with this schedule. Take Tuesdays and Thursdays as an example: class at Lingnan usually ends at 4:30pm. By the time I arrive at the Sports Institute, it is already after 6, so I grab some food at the canteen and then practise until 9 or 9:30, and I don’t get home until at least 11. The pace of life is fast as I have to study and practise, but after I got used to it, I started to think it is not that difficult to cope with," said Chi-hang, who lives in Tuen Mun.

In his nearly 10 years in sport, Chi-hang has experienced ups and downs. While getting resources and securing a place in competitions are becoming more and more fierce, he has managed to stay on and achieve good results. "I had the opportunity to compete in major competitions when I was young and so I tended to think that there would always be plenty of opportunities. But my performance got worse. I once wondered if I should go on playing, and if I would ever win.” He decided to speak to the principal and teachers at his secondary school and to his friends, and it was the encouraging comments from his Physical Education teacher that made him continue: “You have been training for a long time, so why don't you stick with it until you finish secondary school? You can think again then. In any case, this will be good for you in the future.” Chi-hang said: “In 2019, I started to perform better and was among the top eight in the National Games. And since then I have been an elite athlete.”

"With the support I have, I think that if I can manage, I should not give up so easily. Even though I have not had the opportunity to compete in major events in the past few years, I think it is good for me to continue to train. Sport is a way to release stress. When I am playing, I forget the pressure of schoolwork. I enjoy continuously exploring my potential and watching myself improve bit by bit along the way.”

Chi-hang may have to work harder than the others to keep up with his studies, training and competitions though. "It is almost the end of the semester and I have a lot of assignments to work on. Apart from training, I have to study every night. Other students may be able to relax on Saturdays and Sundays, but I cannot. I have to work on assignments every day. I am not as efficient as my fellow classmates, and so I am basically very busy every day.”

Chi-hang is grateful for Lingnan’s support, and the fact that LU responds to his requirements, allowing him flexibility to study, and looking after students with special needs. He recalls that when he first joined, a staff member was assigned to look after him on campus every day, and standing desks were provided in classrooms and the library to make working easier for him. "Like any other student, I can go everywhere on campus by myself, but my training schedule is not easy to accommodate, so the University allows me to choose my subjects and class timetable earlier to cope with the coach's requirements, and this has been very helpful,” he said.

"Sport has enabled me to meet athletes and coaches of all ages, and I have to get along and communicate with different types of people," he said, adding: :It is boccia, and it is this group of people who guide me, who enable me to keep improving, understand my goals and deal with other people. With all this, I myself have changed and become more mature.”

Looking ahead, Chi-hang will continue to train as an athlete, but he hopes to join the business world upon graduation from Lingnan University and contribute to society.

Members should be quick to remove any awkwardness that may arise from unfamiliarity

Nearly every university student has had the embarrassing experience of having no one respond to his or her group messages during a team task. It is critical that members in a team competition have a clear understanding of one another. Furthermore, a team with a high level of tacit understanding improves efficiency and quality. Therefore, the team members met multiple times in the month leading up to the competition in order to get to know each other as quickly as possible. Initial discussions were also held on group management, time planning, and the content of the competition.

Prior to the competition, the team members had a discussion about:

1.
What format of writing should be adopted
2.
What industries and companies should be started with
3.
How to collect relevant information
4.
Identifying and collecting reliable sources of information

Most of the members were unfamiliar with relevant websites such as Bloomberg and Wind. Fortunately, one team member was very familiar with these sources and he found some free time before the competition to help the other members familiarize themselves with the websites. This certainly made it easier for each team member to research information during the competition.

For smooth communication, management within the team was also necessary. The individual members of the team all had internship experiences prior to the competition and after sharing how the companies at which they did their internships were managed, the team members listed several useful rules:

1.
Make a schedule of each member's current tasks so that the team can sort out which issues need to be addressed first and which can be addressed later.
2.
Two meetings must take place each week—in midweek and during the weekend.

The weekend meeting was to discuss problems identified during the research process and to give ideas for solutions.

The midweek meeting was to check the progress of each member on the issues discussed over the weekend.

3. Designate a member to record, organize, and store the minutes of the meetings. This will save time when the team need to review ideas.

4. Each team member shares their personal schedule for the entire week so that everyone in the team knows when she or he is available or busy. Displaying the timetable facilitates communication and minimizes disruptions.

It's important to manage the time well

The key to this problem was time management. Despite the fact that the team had already made plans before the competition, there was nevertheless conflicting obligations such as assignments (exams) and competition tasks. Members of the team had to complete assignments, prep for tests, and catch up on research papers, resulting in days of insomnia. This not only threw off their biological clocks, but it also caused lowered grades and diminished the quality of the research report. This happened because the team distributed the tasks evenly throughout the timeline, ignoring the difference in the number of tasks at the beginning and middle of the semester. To avoid time constraints, progress and participation in the competition should be accelerated and enhanced at the start of the semester or when the study load is not too heavy. To generalize, all conceivable circumstances should be considered while preparing a schedule to minimize unneeded stress.

Task division is not simply doing one’s own tasks

Each section of the research report is linked to the next, so adjustments to one section may affect multiple sections. As a result, even if team members met twice a week, constant communication was essential.

Because of modifications in other parts, content that one team member spent a lot of time on may be erased as a result of this work division pattern. As a result, real-time communication is critical to minimize resentment and lost time. Meanwhile, when gathering data, relevant content for other parts should be communicated to the appropriate group members as soon as possible. The team will assist in highlighting what needs to be viewed, rather than just informing the team member writing that part of the paper that the relevant information is useful.

Using the same software

Working with various process authoring and diagramming tools can make final integration difficult. Members of the teams used Microsoft 365, WPS, and iWork, all of which they had previously used. During the integration process, however, there were typos, sloppy formatting, and font shifting. The team spent two days resolving the typographical issues. To guarantee that the entire report is aesthetically attractive while also not wasting too much time on it, unifying software is necessary.

Don't overly rely on information from websites

The team used to rely too heavily on data and information from websites like Bloomberg. Those sources of information are authoritative and trustworthy, but they are not ours. When researching a firm, it's critical to read the annual reports and news thoroughly in order to form your own opinions on concerns. We wouldn't stand out in the competition if we presented similar ideas to the other reports. Furthermore, just distilling data from other sources is worthless since we learn nothing in the process.

Don’t worry about exceeding the current scope of knowledge

Prior to the competition, the team members indicated varied levels of concern about whether their current levels of expertise would be sufficient to compete. Many courses relevant to the knowledge and techniques required for the competition had not been taken by the team members. As a result, the team had to learn by doing or by seeking guidance from our professors. The members’ capabilities were continually increased in such a cycle of "problem identification - problem investigation - discussion - problem-solving." If you're still hesitant because your present level of understanding is insufficient, join anyway! Even if you don't win any prizes, you'll still have the opportunity to obtain a deeper understanding of the subject and thereby boost the level of knowledge.

Overall, the team’s competitive experience has taught the members that the knowledge gained is critical. Reducing communication expenses and increasing team efficiency should be valued as well. Finally, the team would like to express their gratitude to the professors from Lingnan University's accounting and finance departments for their assistance and support during the competition! The members would like to thank them for everything they've provided for the team!

Elite athletes supported to pursue both sports and academic excellence

Lingu UG Image ALT

In 2021/22, two outstanding athletes are admitted to the Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) programme, through the Entrance Scholarships for Elite Athletes scheme, they are: rugby player Rippei Kaneda (BBA) and handball player Chan Siu-yin (BBA).

“The scheme provides opportunities for me to develop both my academic career and my rugby career,” says Rippei Kaneda. “I can manage my academic life and my rugby life wisely, which is very important as a student athlete.”

Born and raised in Tokyo, Rippei started playing rugby when he was two years old and moved to Hong Kong in 2010. At 13, he was offered a high school rugby scholarship in New Zealand – a nation renowned for the sport – by a “teacher who watched me play online."

“I had amazing experiences and opportunities in New Zealand. However, being a 13-year-old who’s away from family, I had some ups and downs and after a lot of discussions with my family, I decided to come back to Hong Kong,” Rippei recalls.

Now, after a few years in Hong Kong and Japan, Rippei is enjoying studying and sports at Lingnan, and making the most of a liberal arts education.

He appreciates the great exchange opportunities, close teacher and student relationships, the harmonious campus and its surroundings, and hostel life at LU. “I personally believe that hostel life will greatly assist students to become independent, collaborative and respectful.”

But it is the international spirit of LU that he has truly immersed himself in. “There are many students with different backgrounds including exchange students here. I can learn a lot by gaining others’ perspectives,” he says.

Like the 16 other students who have received the scholarship, Rippei is a sports leader and ambassador at LU, demonstrating sportsmanship and teamwork on campus and beyond.

“I strongly believe by receiving Elite Athlete Programme’s support, I can continuously develop to be the best version of myself,” Rippei says.

“Entrance Scholarships for Elite Athletes helped me deal with my financial difficulties, giving me more resources to train and reducing the financial pressure on my parents,” Nick Chan Siu-yin says.

Nick has been playing handball for eight years, and says it requires more teamwork than other mainstream team sports. "It allows me to connect with my friends and brothers. I enjoy training with my teammates, although the training can be very tough… when you see your teammates are trying very hard and don’t give up, you will not give up either."

Like Rippei, Nick appreciates the international exposure he has at LU. “The reason for me joining Lingnan is because it is the only liberal arts university in Hong Kong, and it brings students a sense of belonging and more opportunities than other universities. Here, I am offered many opportunities to exchange overseas, and these opportunities allow me not only to gain knowledge, but also, more importantly, to play with local athletes,” The BBA Year Two student says.

Although it is not clear if any matches or tournaments will be held in the near future due to the pandemic, Nick is in great spirits, and hopes the Lingnan team will triumph in all games and, especially, make a name for itself in handball in the coming year.
