3. Workshop on Indian Classical Music with Eminent Singer Neela Bhagwat

An interactive relationship between elements that are Abstract and those that are Concrete (in fact, those closely related to life experience) is something that finds expression in the performing arts. Classical Indian Music is not an exception to this.

This music workshop will explore the relationship between the concrete and the abstract by showing how to appreciate Indian music, both through its melodic structure and through an actual composition.

Session 1: We will begin by introducing a melody of 7 notes which will be similar to the pure notes in the Western scale. Participants will learn how this melody is produced, and be taught to sing it themselves. Next, a short composition in the Hindi language will be discussed, with written and oral translation and interpretation. Participants will learn to sing this composition together.

Session 2: Voice culture.
Exercises which help improve the enunciation of Vowels and Consonants.
These are different sets of exercises, which consist of (1) Techniques of breathing; (2) Techniques of tongue movement; and (3) Producing speech at various layers of voice ranging from lowest to highest in lower, middle and upper octaves. Although these techniques are based on Indian classical music, they can be used by anyone interested in better voice production in performance.

Session 3: Participant's requests for more inputs; Ms. Bhagwat's feedback.
Neela Bhagwat (b. 1942) is an eminent singer of Indian classical music of the Gwalior style. She also trained in Kathak dance and in modern theatre, and has Master’s degrees in Sociology as well as Marathi and Sanskrit literature. She has been performing since 1979 in a range of venues both in India and internationally, and taken part in musical experiments with Western musicians. Neela Bhagwat has composed music and sung for major Indian independent film-makers like Kumar Shahani and Anup Singh. She regularly conducts workshops on music and voice culture, apart from imparting individualized vocal training to over two dozen students.
