The Space

The Office of Service-Learning and the Lingnan Entrepreneurship Initiative have created a space where members of the university community can learn to build and create things. Filled with the latest technology, the space includes 3D printers, a laser engraver, 3D scanner, electronics equipment, hand tools and all the software needed to use them. OSL and LEI staff are experienced in using the equipment and ready to help with your next project! Below is a description of our equipment and how they can be used.

3D Printers and Engravers

Ultimaker 3D Printers (website:

These are high-end, professional 3D printers. The use fused filament fabrication technology, in which thousands of layers of melted filament are extruded to form a 3D model. We have four models with different build volumes for printing different sized objects. Each printer can print with two materials at once. We have many different types of filament, in different colours including red, orange, green, blue, pink, silver, gold, clear, white and black.

Example uses: creating prototype parts for a product, creating models of characters, custom board game pieces, replacement parts for broken objects

Formlabs Form 2 3D Printer (website:

This is a professional stereolithography which uses a laser to solidify liquid resin and form a 3D model. This printer allows for more complicated models to be printed at a higher resolution compared to other printers. There is a choice between clear or flexible resin and the build volume is 145 x 145 x 175 mm.

Example uses: replications of archaeological objects, printing 3D models of museum specimens, plastic models/molds for jewelry

This is also a fused filament printer, similar to the Ultimaker printers. This printer is more of a hobbyist model and allows for more customization.

Emblaser 2 3D laser cutter/engraver (website:

This is a laser cutter / engraver used to cut precise shapes from wood, paper, cardboard, and other materials. It can also be used to engrave text and images into these materials. It has a fume filter system making it safe for indoor use with a workspace camera that gives a live view of the workspace so that materials can be easily aligned. It has a material capacity of 500 x 300 x 50 mm.

Matter and Form 3D scanner (website:

Uses a laser and sensor to generate a 3D representation of an object, including texture and colour.

Uses the software ‘MF Studio’ or ‘+Quickscan’ and connects using a USB cable. The maximum height for the object is 25 cm, the maximum diameter is 18 cm and the maximum weight is 3 kg.

Electronics Equipment

UNI-T DC Power Supply

This is a three-channel linear DC power supply of adjustable dual channel & fixed single channel output with a constant voltage or current. It is used to temporarily provide precise power while developing a project. It can show voltage and current simultaneously and be used for master-slave tracking and in a series or parallel circuit.

Rigol Oscilloscope

This is a precise tool used for measuring characteristics of electrical circuits and signals. It has a bandwidth of 50MHz as well as 4 Analog channels which can all be viewed on a single screen for analysis with each channel being able to sample at up to 1GSa/s. Its capture rate is up to 30,000 waveforms/s.

We have a large variety of electronic prototype equipment including microcontrollers, LEDs, sensors, prototype breadboards, motors, resistors, cables etc.

Dremel rotary tool, workstation & accessories

A variable speed rotary tool for cutting, carving, grinding, sanding and polishing. It has many accessories including cutting wheels, polishing wheels, sanding discs, finishing abrasive buffs, brushes etc. There is a rotary tool workstation as well giving you a tool holder, drill press and flex shaft holder which are helpful in holding tools in place, drilling perpendicular or angled holes and allows telescopic height adjustment between 16 and 29 inches.
