About Service Registration and Usage
1. How do I register?

Project staff will contact you as soon as possible to make an appointment for the disinfection service arrangement.
2. How is the time of on-site service arranged, and which areas in Hong Kong can use the service?
We will try our best to arrange on-site service according to the time filled in by the residents. Service hours are as follows:
- 9 am to 8 pm ( Monday to Saturday )
- 9 am to 5 pm ( Sunday )
The service area includes most parts of Hong Kong, except outlying islands and remote areas. For details, please contact our staff.
3. Do I need to pay to register and use the UV disinfection service?
This service is free of charge. The UV disinfection service is funded by the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charity Trust’s "COVID-19 Emergency Fund".
4. How long does each disinfection process take?
Full house disinfection process takes about 5-30 minutes (depending on the environment and size of the household). In a 200 square feet space, the exposure time is about 15 minutes. Three spaces can be disinfected at the same time.
5. How many people will come to carry out the service? Which organization(s) does they (Project volunteers) come from?
Project volunteers will be divided into teams of 2-3 people to visit the households. Through different social welfare organizations, Lingnan University recruits neighborhood residents to become community anti-epidemic ambassadors, and each ambassador will be equipped with a volunteer badge.
6. What do I need to prepare before the service?
We hope the residents will provide an extension unit to power the UV disinfection device.
During the service, residents will have conversations with the volunteers. To reduce the risk of virus transmission, residents and volunteers are requested to wear masks. For household items, residents do not need to move them. The UV disinfection device only needs to be placed flat on the ground to perform the disinfection procedure.
7. Besides disinfecting the household surfaces, can the UV irradiation sterilize the clothes at the same time?
We recommend washing as the most effective way to clean clothes.
8. Do I need to use 1:99 bleach to wipe the house after disinfecting with UV light?
The effect of UV disinfection service is similar to daily cleaning of the home with bleach. Residents still need to do proper house cleaning afterwards to prevent the growth of bacteria and viruses.
In addition, we also recommend residents to wash their hands and clean their belongings after going out each time, so as to reduce the risk of infection.
9. I am not living in a sub-divided unit, but I am interested in using the service, is this possible?
We will give priority to arrange services for residents with more crowded living environment. If you are not living in a sub-divided unit but belong to a family with a lower household income or which includes a chronic patient, you can also register first and our staff will contact you.

About UV Disinfection Technology
1. How can UV light kill microorganisms such as viruses?
UV light with a wavelength of 253.7nm can destroy the genetic material in the microbial cells in a short time, causing the death of the growth and/or regenerative cell, and achieve the effect of sterilization and disinfection.
UV sterilization is a pure physical disinfection method, and there will be no residue or secondary contamination.
2. Is there any precedent for UV disinfection?
The UV lamp commonly used in biological science laboratories can effectively kill bacteria and restraint virus replication. It has been used in hospitals and laboratories for more than 90 years. However, due to the large size of the equipment and the lack of mobile protection devices, it is not suitable for uses outside the laboratory.
3. What is the efficacy of UV disinfection?
Scientific research has confirmed that the UV lamp can effectively kill 95% of viruses, bacteria and fungi in the irradiation range, so as to prevent the spread of pathogens through the air or through the surface of objects.
4. What is the design principle of this UV disinfection device?
Based on the design of UV lamp with radiation wavelength of 253.7nm, new features include a mobile protection device, portable stand, safety sensor, remote control, household transformer, and smart phone control to produce a mobile UV disinfection device suitable for use in household environments.
5. Why is this equipment suitable for use in tenement house (Tang Lou)?
The UV disinfection device used in this project is designed, assembled and produced by Lingnan University. The design priority of the device is the effectiveness of disinfection. Its body is light and easy to carry. It is especially suitable for transportation to tenement buildings without a lift and operation within the limited space of sub-divided units.
6. Is it safe to use UV light indoors?
When the irradiation device is turned on, humans and pets need to leave the room illuminated by UV light. Long-term exposure to UV light is equivalent to long-term exposure to large amount of sunlight, which is not conducive to health.
But when the irradiation device is turned off, there will be no residue or secondary contamination. No worry!
7. Does the use of UV light indoors damage the surface structure of the wall?
No, short-term exposure does not affect the wall.
8. Does the irradiation device use a lot of electricity?
No, the power required by this device is equal to 3 general light tubes.
9. After the first use of UV light disinfection service, how often do I need to irradiate again?
The use of UV light disinfection service is similar to daily cleaning of the home with bleach. Residents still need to do proper home cleaning afterwards to prevent the virus transmission and bacterial growth.
This Project hopes to provide free disinfection service for households who have never used the service before. If the household wants to use the service again, they can consult our Project staff. Service arrangement might be made if there is extra manpower.
