Lingnan students engage in international volunteer service programmes

Five Lingnan students were selected to join two overseas social service programmes.  They will develop and implement community service projects in the coming six months so that they can understand the development of community and public services in different regions, with their horizon broadened and leadership skills nurtured.

The “UNV - Hong Kong Universities Volunteer Programme” was launched by the Agency for Volunteer Service in collaboration with the Hong Kong Volunteers Association and the Peace and Development Foundation.  Around 20 undergraduate students were selected from local universities, who will travel to field units or agencies of the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) in South East Asia to provide voluntary services for six months.  It allows students to realise their personal potentials, strengthens their understanding on different cultures, and facilitates them to contribute to the international community.  Two Lingnan students Man Tin-yee (Cultural Studies Year 4) and Liu Xiaoyue (Social Sciences Year 2) will participate in this volunteer programme from July 2017 to January 2018 and join frontline volunteer services in Timor-Leste and Thailand respectively.

The Lingnan W.T. Chan Fellowships Programme is another volunteer project that provides challenging educational and leadership cultivation opportunities for students through service-learning and intercultural exposure in the US.  It encourages participants to explore the professional spirit of intercultural communication and volunteer services, so that their personal growth and leadership talent can be benefited.  Three Lingnan students Kwan Sau-yi (Psychology Year 3), Tsui Sai-hang (Social and Public Policy Year 4) and Jealdrin Madrid (Marketing and International Business Year 3) were selected to join the Programme from August 2017 to January 2018.  During the period they will stay with local host families, work as interns in non-profit organisations and attend classes in University of California, Berkeley every week.  The Programme will bring to the students a more in-depth understanding and knowledge on local culture and public services, thus widening their global horizons.
